The plastic surgeon told me last fall he would fill it in small increments. My radiation oncologist said my skin wouldn't be ready for full reconstruction until about 6 months post radiation. I am under no deadline to get it filled. Thanks for the input maybe getting it filled will help with some of the hard edges of it poking my skin in several places.

14 days agoMy plastic surgeon was really big on not having me in pain. He said cancer is painful enough (on many levels) without him instilling more. That said, he encouraged me to tell him when I felt anything while he was doing the injecting. I would feel pressure as the needle went through the skin into the valve. For me a lot of that whole area has numbness, so feeling something meant the stretching of the muscle. With the last two fills, I felt a little muscle discomfort for a day after, but it was quite manageable. I didn't find the process painful. I hope you have the same response.
During the injection, we engaged in conversations about what size I would want for an outcome and what size he thought would be best from his perspective. By the time I had the second stage reconstruction (one month ago), I was firm in my decisions and ready. Unlike much of this journey, you can actually take some time and think about what you want the final results to be.
My practical suggestion is to take a deep breath and try to relax. It goes pretty quick.
