4 Valuable Life Lessons Cancer Teaches Us

by Brittany McNabb

Along with the lasting side effects, battle scars, and life changes that cancer brings us, fortunately it can also bring a few valuable life lessons. Many WhatNexters say that once they have reached the light at the end of the tunnel - remission - they see that cancer has changed them in positive ways. Here are four valuable life lessons that WhatNexters themselves shared.

Valuable Life Lessons Cancer Teaches Us

1. Don't underestimate the power of human connection.

WhatNext is a true testament to the power of human connection. Even online, people can form valuable connections that can get them through things they could not do on their own. If WhatNext has the capability to do so much, imagine what you can do for people with cancer face-to-face. Survivors have the power to impact one another and loved ones have the power to impact their other loved ones with cancer.

2. Be kind and patient with people because you never know what life obstacle they are facing.

Many WhatNexters say that cancer changed their daily perspective on people. They say that once you have been through something as difficult as cancer you realize that you have no idea what other people are going through and should always treat them with kindness.

3. Appreciate your body and take care of it.

Many people feel like they were careless with their body before they were diagnosed with cancer. Of course this is not always the case, you can take care of your body everyday of your life and still get cancer. But, in retrospect some WhatNexters say that they wish they had put healthier habits in place when they were younger or more healthy.

4. Take positive steps to enjoy life.

Even, and especially, in the midst of trauma it can be important to continue to enjoy life - small or big things. It seems silly to be purposeful about "enjoying life," but sometimes it is not easy. You have to find joy in life and do things to bring yourself happiness.
