7 Reasons to Experiment With CBD Oil

CBD is such a versatile treatment that can help with so many conditions because it regulates the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is known to influence various aspects of physical and mental health via multiple neurotransmitters and receptors. It appears that modulating the ECS provides researchers with new ways to manage unusual conditions that existing medication either doesn’t work for or causes extreme side effects.

In contrast, CBD has very few side effects and is being used to treat epilepsy that does not respond to traditional pharmaceutical drugs.

Keeping a balanced and regulated ECS sets the tone for good overall health, however, this knowledge has historically been absent from mainstream science, due to several decades of stifled cannabis research. Despite civilizations knowing that cannabis had medicinal value for thousands of years, this was forgotten for much of the 20th century, as near-global prohibition was brought in. Research came at a trickle, with the isolation of THC in the 1960s and the discovery of the ECS in the 1990s.

But how could cancer patients benefit from experimenting with cannabidiol (CBD)? Here are seven reasons to give it a try.


This serious mood disorder has become a global problem – the World Health Organization estimates that 300 million are affected by the condition worldwide. Unhappiness levels are rising, due to constant work pressure, the proliferation of social media, increasingly sedentary lifestyles and more.

Depression Cancer

Unfortunately, antidepressant drugs often don’t work well – not a surprise since there are eight distinct types of depression. The first-choice is typically selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), but for some depression types these are completely ineffective, and even when they do work there can be side effects. However, CBD has been found to repair broken circuitry in the prefrontal cortex and also reverses structural damage to the hippocampus, which is associated with memory.

CBD may also chemically improve mood by increasing anandamide levels, and by influencing the serotonin system – much more research is necessary on the latter.


Anxiety problems seem to be getting worse, with social media placing a high priority on appearance and success. And with the 24/7 availability of the internet and social media, it can become impossible to switch off, relax and clear the mind from a cluster of negative thoughts.


Anxiety grows when the balance between inhibition and excitation in the brain is lost, and the brain is in a prolonged and lopsided over-excited state. This can be treated by upping the concentration of inhibitory neurotransmitters. Conveniently, CBD does just this with gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) – as a positive allosteric modulator of the GABAA receptor, CBD makes it more responsive to GABA neurotransmitters, which have a calming psychological influence.

CBD as a Neuroprotectant

When neurons become exposed as the protective myelin sheath degrades, neurodegeneration accelerates, increasing vulnerability to diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. The speed of nerve impulses is initially reduced, but over time these connections can become totally destroyed.

However, there are several research pieces, mostly on rodents, purporting the benefits that CBD, cannabichromene (CBC) and other non-psychoactive cannabinoids for good brain health. Preventing shrinkage to the hippocampus is key to stopping Alzheimer’s, as this section of the brain is responsible for storing our autobiographical memory. As antioxidants, cannabinoids also limit the oxidative stress exerted on the brain, which can speed up the deterioration of the organ.

The long-term neurological benefits of CBD are not yet understood, but few compounds are capable of restoring neurogenesis. The U.S. federal government happens to hold an active patent on cannabinoids as part of neuroprotectant drugs.

Improve sleep with CBD

The recommendation of at least seven hours of sleep per night is not simply so we don’t feel fatigued. Sleep and particularly deep sleep happens to be essential for allowing the brain and the rest of the body to recover. Therefore, when disrupted by anxiety, high stress, insomnia, restlessness, and other night-time problems, the long-term impact can be severe. When we are in deep sleep, neurotoxins that have accumulated can be removed by cerebrospinal fluid.

When Sleep Wont Come

How does CBD fit into the equation? Firstly, by treating some of the issues that are causing a lack of sleep, like increased stress levels. But also by regulating the body’s delicate circadian rhythm, which calls for the release of certain hormones at certain times – for example, sleep-inducing melatonin is boosted during the evening. With CBD edibles and CBD capsules working for up to eight hours for some people, these are perfect for solving sleeping difficulties.

Immune system regulation

Existing pharmaceutical drugs struggle to control the immune system, and this leads to excessive inflammation and even autoimmune diseases, where the body literally starts to attack itself. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease, and we see the effects of too much inflammation in swelling to an injury.

For the body to experience a regulated and steady amount of inflammation, the interaction of endocannabinoids with CB2 receptors appears vital – endocannabinoids send messages to the receptors which are attached to white blood cells. Stopping endocannabinoid degradation by blocking enzymes, which CBD does, keeps more of these neurotransmitters in the body to facilitate this process.

Inflammation of the skin is treatable with CBD topicals, including salves, creams, and balms. Internal inflammation such as ulcerative colitis needs a product where the CBD is either ingested or inhaled, such as edibles or CBD e-liquid and vape oil. Side effects of CBD, in comparison to commonly-prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), are minimal.


Fibromyalgia is surely one of the most frustrating and helpless conditions for those with it, as researchers have yet to discover the cause and therefore a treatment. But since discovering the ECS, a concept of general dysfunction in the system has been proposed – this is called Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency (CECD). Proponents argue that not everyone has a well-functioning ECS due to low endocannabinoid production. Considering that heightened pain sensitivity, low mood and reduced cognition, a rare set of symptoms, are all ECS-related, this theory is clearly feasible.

More than two million Americans suffer from OCD, a mental condition which can cause an increased fear of germs, fear of losing control, intrusive thoughts and more. The constant negative effects have an adverse effect on quality of life. However, CBD can help to reduce the panic that is caused by the negative feedback loops which typify OCD. There is a lack of scientific research in this area, but boosting GABA may explain why this happens.
