Are You a Guardian Angel?

by GregP_WN

We recently posted a truly inspirational story about Jim Bond, (Patient 007) and his wife, Kathleen. In the story we learned that Jim is battling multiple myeloma—truly battling. He’s participated in clinical trials, shared his experience with patients, health care providers, and the general public, to raise awareness about MM. If anyone deserved a guardian angel, it was Jim

In 2012, he was at a cross-road in his treatment. His oncologist determined he needed to be matched with a donor for blood stem cells. Often, finding a donor is not an easy task—but enter Be The Match® (bethematch.org) and Jim’s guardian angel, who turned out to be a young woman 4,000 miles away in Germany who was a match!

Most of us take the Internet for granted, but 23 years ago it would have been nearly impossible for Jim to find a perfect match in such a short amount of time. Luckily, technology has advanced to where Be the Match, an organization dedicated to finding bone-marrow matches, has been able to help more than 68,000 patients globally.

Could you be someone’s guardian angel? It’s easier than you think. Go to bethematch.org and click “Join”.

1. You'll answer a questionnaire and provide your information.
2. Be The Match sends a kit for you to complete a cheek swab. They provides the return shipping and packaging.
3. Be The Match tests the sample you’ve provided to determine if you have the right blood protein for a patient in the system. If not, they keep your sample on file for future notice.

When you join the registry, you might be someone’s guardian angel and be the difference between life and death for many different conditions requiring blood plasma cells, bone marrow, or blood proteins, and more.

The patient's healthcare team will contact you and let you know the good news! Then, you will schedule your trip, should it be necessary. Almost all travel expenses are covered by Be the Match.

Then, you will get the opportunity to meet a stranger, maybe save a life, and earn the official title of Guardian Angel.
