Disclaimer: cancer is not funny. However, laughter therapy is one of the best everyday ways to cope with having cancer. Such a personal disease often eliminates pretense and brings people together. Funny videos about cancer help to raise awareness, and remind people of routine tests to remember, while still remaining light-hearted.
1. Rethink Breast Cancer: Your Man Reminder
Rethink Breast Cancer, a Canadian breast cancer charity that brings bold awareness to the ‘under-40 crowd’, has released a number of humorous videos promoting self-examinations that uses attractive men as eye candy. If this video doesn’t remind women to check themselves, I don’t know what will!
2. Movember: David’s Biggest Problem
November was Prostate Cancer Awareness Month; this video shows that “a mustache doesn’t make you creepy, being creepy makes you creepy”. A lot of men grew their mustaches in support of prostate cancer; this video get people laughing out loud at the awkwardness of the character, and then donating to support prostate cancer and male mental health.
3. The American Cancer Society & The Ad Council PSA: Polyp Man Series
In 2010, The American Cancer Society ran public service ads featuring a “Polyp Man” to raise colon cancer awareness. A few different videos ran; they all featured a man in a large red suit. Using this portrayal of the polyp definitely increased awareness and brought a few laughs (not to mention the man in the suit looks ridiculous!).
4. Funny Stories from 4 Deaf Breast Cancer Survivors
In this video, four deaf breast cancer survivors talk about losing their hair during their cancer treatment and the self-images that accompanied with that change. One woman admits that she felt like Mr. Clean during her bald stage! The main consensus, “Against the assault of the laughter, nothing can stand." - Mark Twain.
5. Pink Glove Dance
The employees at this hospital put a video together of their staff dancing and acting silly while wearing pink gloves to generate breast cancer awareness. There’s no slapstick humor here but it’s meant to be light-hearted and funny while inspiring others to join the cause.
