Self-Care and Sexuality with Breast Cancer

Self-Care and Sexuality with Breast Cancer

Self-care can improve your overall well-being—and your sex life. Eat a healthy diet to provide your body with the nutrients it needs: Eating lots of fruits and vegetables, and a regular protein source are the main things to focus on. And carbohydrates and sugars are the foods to limit in your food intake. This helps your body to rebuild tissues and strengthen your immune system. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. This can help decrease hot flashes and promotes moisture.

Give yourself enough sleep. Sleep strengthens your immune system and increases energy. Hot flashes, depression, some medications, and some treatments can disrupt your body’s sleep patterns.

If you can, don’t nap during the day, but exercise during the day. This releases endorphins, which relieve stress and decrease fatigue. Physical fitness also has a positive effect on sex, and it decreases hot flashes, strengthens the pelvic muscles, fights weight gain, and helps improve sleep patterns. Even moderate activity improves breast cancer survival. Night-time exercise and TV should however be avoided. Wind down at night, maybe with a hot bath or reading. Discuss herbal remedies such as melatonin with your physician. Yoga, acupuncture, or hypnosis can also help.
