    Surgery

    Procedure or Surgery

I had my left kidney removed at the Lahey Clinic on 6/24/10. The surgery took about 5 hours. my tumor was the size of a baseball wrapped around an artery, so I could not have laproscopic surgery. My recovery was very painful and I should have stayed an extra day or two in the hospital....had surgery Thursday and was out on Sunday afternoon. I not only had pain from the abdominal surgery, my was also dealing with a right hip that had fractured from a tumor that was growing there.

    Radiation

I had 18 radiation treatments to my right hip due to a tumor and fracture there in the iliac crest. the only side effect I had was a sunburn like area on my coccyx. The procedures were quick...the longest part was setting everything up, plus I have 3 tiny tattoos where they had to mark on my skin for the procedure.

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I started with Sutent but it caused my wbc to go too low. I was then on IV chemo once per week (Torisal) for four months. after that I started on Afinitor which was a daily oral med. that went fine until June (no side effects) when I was put on a spend down (deductible) with NH medicaid...I was then going a few days, and then a few weeks without getting my medication....didn't meet the spend down requirements for the month, etc. This medication was around $7000 per month and I could not get it a lot of the time because of medicaid. then, I missed two months of chemo in September and October 2011 due to the spend down. I had another ct scan in October 2011 and was told that my cancer had spread to my lymph system.

    Oh No

I had radiation to my right hip due to a tumor on the iliac crest. that bone fractured as I was leaving work for the day in April 2010. I didn't fall or have any type of accident...it just shattered when I stopped abruptly as I was going out the door. (someone was coming in as I was trying to leave) I drove home 22 miles in a lot of pain and had the area x-rayed. the hospital told me I had bursitis, but the next day my pcp called and said that there was a fracture....and also a mass on my left kidney. thus began my journey with cancer. I had a PET scan in August 2010 and everything was fine, but 2 ct scans this year confirmed that my cancer has spread to my lymph system.
