    Diagnosed

    Oh No

I was diagnosed June 28, 2012 with localized DCIS. Breast cancer does not run in our family so it was quite a shock to find out I had it in the right breast in two places. When I saw the surgeon there was a third place that the radiologist missed completely and it was at the 5:30 position whereas the other two were at 1 and 2:00. The surgeon ordered and MRI and we found out I had two clusters in the left breast that did not show up on the mammogram. They wanted to do a triple MRI guided biopsy and I told him no just take them both off because I am sure the other is cancer too and if it wasn't it soon would be. Needless to say I reported that radiologist for his neglect in doing his job correctly.

    Double Mastectomy

    Procedure or Surgery

I had a lot of pain with this operation and they had to keep working with different drugs until they could come up with a coctail of drugs that would work on the pain. I was in the hospital for 5 days. Not a pleasant experience when I had to take my first shower. I cried the entire time because of the shock of it all.

    Went as Expected: Agree
    Minimal Recovery: Neutral/NA
    Minimal Side Effects: Disagree
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Disagree

    Finished treatment

    Celebration

They got all of the cancer in the operation and I didn't have to have chemo or radio.

To have or not have a double mastectomy

    Decision Point

I could have had a lumpectomy on the right breast, but decided I did not want to live my life in fear of the cancer coming back and being invasive instead of localized. When the found the clusters in the left breast I had to make that decision for a double mastectomy. I just didn't want to live in fear of the cancer coming back for the rest of my life.

    Last reconstruction surgery

    Celebration

I am so excited. My last reconstruction surgery with implants is coming up soon. I can't wait. Just want to get this off done and over with and look normal again. It will probably be the end of this month or the first week of April. I can't wait to look like a women again.

    TRAM flap reconstruction surgery

    Other Care

They used the lower belly fat to make new breasts, but they aren't quite done. The breast are not the size I want and they need to be contoured and the extra skin removed so I look normal. I go in for my 2nd reconstruction surgery on the 4th and hopefully the doctor will get the size I want, the shape right and the tummy tuck finished. I will be glad when this is all over with. He said if I am not happy with the breast size that he can later implant a small silicone implant to bring them both up to the size I want. I am a tall, sort of large woman with a large bone frame and a size A or B cup just isn't going to do it for me. Keep ya posted.
