    Diagnosed

    Oh No

My MIL has been having stomach issues for months before her GP ordered a CT scan. That scan showed the tumor around her pancreas. More scans and tests and an endoscopic biopsy confirmed inoperable stage 4 adenocarcinoma of the pancreas, with a partial bile duct blockage. My head-smack moment came when the 1st oncologist was discussing treatment options with us, and it hit me "I'm a caregiver again."

    Implant chemotherapy port

    Procedure or Surgery

Port installed Feb. 7. I asked her if she felt bionic now. She said "A little, but mainly bruised, battered and wearing loads of tape!"

    bile duct stent

    Procedure or Surgery

She had a bile duct stent installed on Feb. 11th before chemo can start. The bile duct was completely blocked and the procedure took close to 2 hours. Her jaundice and overall appetite got better after the procedure.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

First chemo session, and we were there for 8 hours. Chemo drug #1 administered for 2 hours, chemo drug #2 administered for 90 min. and chemo drug #3 (5-FU, what an appropriate name) is administered via pump for 46 hours. Her potassium levels were low so she got a 4 hour infusion of that along with the anti-nausea, steroids, calcium gluconate, etc. So far so good on the side effects, but I know it is very early. Repeat every 2 weeks for 4 sessions, then CT to see what's up.

    Diarrhea

    Side Effects

How do you know if the diarrhea is caused by the tumor, the chemo, or both? Worse on day 5 (or day 2 after the pump was disconnected). She has a hard time eating and drinking and I worry she isn't getting enough nutrients or fluids. She seemed better on day 6/3.

    Nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy)

    Side Effects

She is having problems with fine motor function and she is sensitive to cold. Warm, flat ginger ale seems to be working for her--she gets some sugars and lots of fluids. Not sure if the throat pain is all from the procedure done on Monday and/or if it is also partly from the neuropathy. Getting her to eat and drink enough is a challenge. I worry about her being alone.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

Chemo session #2 is done. Oncologist prescribed potassium pills and gave her a month long anti-diarrhea shot. She's more active than before, but may be over doing it a bit.
