    Remission

    Celebration

Kind of remmision. My ct scan just before Christmas 2012 showed the cancer was rock stable in the liver. No change in size. The scan showed no more lymph node involvement although two lesions were present on vertebrae in my back 7 and 9 mm in size. But, the ct comment was they have probably become noticeable due to treatment of some kind (chemo). They will monitor this very closely. next ct scan is March 26 coming up. My CEA tumour marker has dropped from 116 in August 2012 to 18.7 this past Tuesday, March 5, 2013. Very encouraging news indeed!

    Cancer has spread/Metastasized

    Oh No

Diagnosed August 2012 with colon cancer it was found that it metastasized to lymph nodes and liver. The surgery done for the colon also included removal of 13 lymph nodes, 7 of which were biopsied positive for cancer. The liver is affected in all parts making it inoperable and terminal.

    Colon surgery (colectomy or hemicolectomy)

    Procedure or Surgery

I remain neutral to the side effects and impact as after 6 months I am still healing (or changing) after losing the ascending colon and half of the transverse. The works just don't work the same anymore.

    Went as Expected: Agree
    Minimal Recovery: Agree
    Minimal Side Effects: Neutral/NA
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Neutral/NA

    Diarrhea

    Side Effects

Several bowel movements a day (as many as 10) leaves the bottom raw and painful. Baby creams help a lot as well as soaking in the tub.

    Stool leakage

    Side Effects

There is always a small amount of liquid leakage especially during diarrhea. It adds to the rawness and pain.

    Shortness of breath

    Side Effects

With the minimal amount of exertion I seem to be gasping for air. I have to sit and rest very often. It makes it hard to really exercise.

    Pain

    Side Effects

For the most part the pain has been a non issue. Last Thanksgiving (2012) I had a temperature issue and went to the hospital and had pain (7/10) under the right ribs (liver cancer) and percocet was given and ended the pain. There has been no recurrence of that. The Avastin was added to the cycles beginning January. There has been some stomach pains (2/10) that have been OK without medication. The rectal pain from the diarrhea has been the biggest problem.

    Nausea/Vomiting

    Side Effects

I have had very limited nausea/vomiting. The little nausea I have experienced is handled easily with PMS Metocloropramide every 4 hrs. The percocet did send me into a vomitting spree at higher prescribed amounts so I cut the amount down for the very few times I have been forced to use it.

    Constipation

    Side Effects

Cycles 1 through 3 last year left me very constipated. I was told which stool looseners and pushers to buy over the counter to eliminate the problem with success. Since then it has been the diarrhea problem.

    Low blood pressure (hypotension)

    Side Effects

After cycle 6 last year I had a break over Christmas. For several days I had blood pressure down as low as 78/57 with the pulse climbing to 107. I am medicated for hypertension and stopped the blood pressure pills for 6 days until the readings were normal. I have no further issues with blood pressure since with the medication.

    Fatigue (tiredness)

    Side Effects

I am always tired. It's hard to get things done as very little exertion just beats me down. Except on chemo weeks when the anti-nausea steroids wind me up for 23 hr days for 2 - 3 days. Lots of energy then but about 5 days after the infusion the crash happens into the fatigue again.

Low white blood cell counts (neutropenia)

    Side Effects

My white blood counts are always a bit low. The neutrophil count was down to 1.2 for one cycle which they had to fail me and send me home. By the following week the count had come way back up to 2.3 and has been there for a few weeks now.

    Flu-like symptoms (fever, chills, sweats)

    Side Effects

Thanksgiving last year my temperature went to 39 degC and went directly to hospital. I was having under rib pains as well with chills and sweats. Extra strength Tylenol was all I had at home and I took a couple before leaving for hospital (an hour drive). By the time I was in the emergency it had lowered to normal but being a cancer patient in the small country hospital they went through the full battery of blood tests and chest xrays and monitored me for a couple hours before sending me away with some percocet for the what turned out to be liver pain most likely they said from the tumors in it. There have been no recurrence since.
