    Internal radiation

    Radiation

My husband had radiation a few months before surgery. One of the complications in surgery was, according to the surgeon, an extensive amount of scar tissue from the radiation. We were told radiation was necessary to reduce the tumors as much as possible. No one mentioned the possibility of scar tissue obstructing the surgical process.

    Removal of rectal tumor

    Procedure or Surgery

He went into surgery expecting removal of tumors, possibility of colostomy that could be reversed after a few months. The surgery was harder than expected, more radical than expected, what the surgeon found inside was more than expected. He ended up with a permanent colostomy. I'm trying to remember the name of the procedure...in the end it was rectal cancer. I'm told it's called colorectal until the surgeon is in there to see what's what.

Medicine for low white blood cell count

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

My husband actually had all of these treatments at different times. One thing would leave to another in terms of a health issue.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I disagree because one issue opened up to another. Many times he was refused chemo due to poor counts, so meds were given to ramp up counts. These were temporary fixes. Chemo schedule became erratic depending on counts. Very worrisome for us.

    Remission

    Celebration

Finally, after two years of treatment, and radical surgery, months of catheter use, months of incontinence at night due to nerve damage, after weeks and months of depression all around, we thought we were free.

Need to decide how to treat growing tumors.

    Decision Point

Due to erratic chemo treatments, his tumors grew.Oncologist suggested consulting with Radiologist. Thought maybe one or two shots of radiation might shrink tumors. There are risks to this approach.
