first diagnosed with rectal cancer after colonoscopy

    Oh No

I had no symptoms other than lower back pain. My doctor said I was in great shape but at 55, I was overdue for a colonoscopy so scheduled one.

    Colostomy

    Procedure or Surgery

In order to have the colostomy my stomach had to be free of all fluids and not be distended. I spent 8 days with tubes coming out of every orifice draining me. My weight dropped from 160lbs to 120 lbs in that one week. My legs and arms disappeared along with all my muscle (I was active in body building at my local gym)

    Went as Expected: Agree
    Minimal Recovery: Strongly Disagree
    Minimal Side Effects: Strongly Disagree
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Strongly Disagree

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I feel sick after every treatment (I am writing this from the cancer center where I am having round 10 right now). I then have to be connected via an IV to a pouch of drugs for 46 hours, so have to carry around the pouch with the tube connected to my port.

    Minimal Side Effects: Strongly Disagree
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Strongly Disagree

    Health insurance issue

    Oh No

Health insurance company refused to cover treatment on the grounds that it must be a pre-existing condition as nobody (???) has stage IV as the first diagnosis. Despite letters from my doctor that I was fit and had not been treated for anything in the past 5 years, they still refused. I have been through 3 appeals, and they finally agreed to cover some costs, but won't communicate on what they are covering and it seems to be random as sometimes treatment is covered and other times not.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

Went back for chemo round #10 of scheduled 12 yesterday. vomited just as the bag was finishing. Have to carry the pouch for 46 hours again. Ate some fruit when I got home, but vomited again. Made it through last night ok. when I had chemo round 9 I vomited 4 times that day and night but then nothing after I got rid of the bag, hope this is the same

    Pain

    Symptoms

Reached a point this past week where the pain is so unbearable i curse when I wake up in the morning as I know it is another day of pain and suffering, not just for me but the people around me. My lovely wife has been so good, and I see how it hurts her so much that there is nothing she can do except to be there. I am so lucky to have her and my children, but I see how I drag everyone down. It is a struggle to get up each day now, but I try to take strength from those around me including the support from those in this group. Thank you

    Side Effects

Started a new more aggressive chemo treatment just recently and got a new side effect of neuropathy, where your body extremities cannot tolerate the cold. If I wash my hands or get something cold out of the fridge it just burns. I tried some ice cream and it was like eating sand. Not sure how many others have had this.
