    Diagnosis

    Oh No

Felt a lump. Doctor ordered mammogram (Feb 27, 2013) & US. Radiologist ordered biopsy (Mar 8) of two sites in breast and one in an enlarged lymph node. Biopsy (Mar 13) and a call from Primary Physician (Mar 15) lymph biopsy positive for cancer. Breast biopsy also shows cancer (Mar 18) Invasive Ductile Carcinoma with at large grade 3 tumor with lymph involvement. Met Oncologist (Mar 19) and Surgeon and Radiologist (Mar 20). Scheduled to start Chemo on April 2. I can't believe this is real!

Low white blood cell counts (neutropenia)

    Side Effects

Surgery to have port put in was cancelled due to low white count. Had everything scheduled (child care, transportation, etc) and had labs done on the 15th. Irritated. Wondering if chemo that is scheduled for tomorrow will also be delayed. No new date for port surgery. Had blood draw this morning. More needles. Will have to wait and see... In the meantime, I have a leaky pipe upstairs that is dripping water thru my kitchen ceiling, a drippy kitchen faucet, my oven died when the power company lost power for three hours then came back on, and car needs to go visit mechanic. Gaaaaaa!

Medicine for low white blood cell count

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

Had second Chemo on May 1 and on next day gave myself injection of Neulasta. So glad insurance allowed me to give it to myself instead of making drive to Doctor. It was easier to inject myself than I expected. Didn't really hurt (although I felt so awful from the chemo that I'm not sure I would have noticed) Not feeling any side effects, but I would be interested in knowing how low my white count goes this time around. I was SHOCKED at the cost of the Neulasta, almost $4000 for single injection.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

Threw up before they even started drug! Nerves! Had number four of four AC treatments on June 19. Half way there! 5 days of feeling totally gross and out of it -- nauseous, achy, weak, sleepy, weepy, and grouchy (my own dwarfs of chemo - eat your heart out Snow White!) --but now I'm back! Will start weekly chemo with Taxol on July 9th. Need to schedule MRI before then so we can tell how much first chemo cocktail has accomplished. Already feeling VERY anxious about new drug! I'm about 80% bald everywhere that used to have hair. I wonder if it will start coming back?

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

July 9 2013 Started new chemo drug. I am now on Taxol weekly for 12 weeks. I've had 2 and so far so good. I did have to change from Neulasta to Neuprogen to keep my white cells from dropping to low.

    What surgery should I have?

    Decision Point

I had an MRI on Oct 2, 2013 to see how well chemo had done in shrinking the tumor in my breast and lymph nodes. Looks good -- much different from where I started. Surgeon said node dissection on right was a given, and radiation after surgery would still be necessary, but gave me the options of Lumpectomy, Mastectomy (right only and maybe later left) or bi-lateral Mastectomy. And then reconstruction at anytime. I want to be as aggressive as possible in fighting this. My husband says what every decision I make, he is OK with it. I have dealt with lumpy, bumpy, dense breast tissue and biopsies for 30 years. Now I'm fighting Triple Neg. and getting rid of a very fast growing tumor that quickly spread to lymph system. I am leaning towards dbl-mx, followed by radiation, then uneventful rest period :-) and then, maybe, reconstruction using my own tissue and fat. Pre-op scheduled for Oct 30 and surgery for Nov 5. Scared, not of the surgery but of everything that comes after.

    Double Mastectomy

    Procedure or Surgery

November 5, 2013 Bi-lateral mastectomy with node biopsy on left and lymph node dissection on right. Started at about 10:30 am with injection of radioactive dye into left breast - ouch! About 2 1/2 hours later I walked into the OR climbed onto the table. Kind of like a movie. Gas mask coming and then woke up in recovery. Wonderful nurses with wonderful pain medications in recovery and from there I was admitted to hospital for overnight stay. I though I would sleep and my husband went home. (he said later that I looked horrible -- thanks sweetie!) One of the LONGEST nights of my life. Small private room with big window - I thought it was NEVER going to get light. Husband came back in the morning and as soon as I could get up, pee, and walk a lap around the unit floor. I wanted out. Slept most of the first two days home. Stayed on pain meds regularly. Started switching to extra-strength Tylenol on third day. Sleeping in recliner and taking care of drains. I've been able to shower a couple of times. Husband went back to work today and kids are at school. Weird sore, kind of pinch or stab in front of left shoulder and lots of pain in right upper inside of arm (nerve??). Lots of bruising, but it is already changing colors. Staying in PJs to remind my family not to expect too much. Wonderful friends and family! Cards, flowers and food - so thankful! And, while a few tears have leaked out (like when my surgeon walked in) I don't really miss my breasts. Maybe because I've had time to get used to the idea of them not being there while I did Chemo... Now it is time to heal. Appt with Oncologist tomorrow and surgeon the following Monday.

    Physical Therapy

    Other Care

Seeing Physical Therapist. 4 visits to start with. She has already helped me a lot! I was having trouble with "cording" running from arm pit to wrist and she has helped loosen that some. I've got some more exercises I can do to help regain complete range of motion. Scarring is tight, so working on that. She is also helping me with minor lymphodema (dissection puts me at risk, as does my upcoming radiation) doing massage and I have a prescription for sleeve and glove. Seeing Radiation Oncologist, again, on Monday Dec 23 for "planning & marking" before starting radiation treatment. Saw Dr earlier this month, but really needed the PT and more time to heal. Nothing major. Things are OK.
