    Diagnosed

    Oh No

In October, at age 40, I went in for my mamogram like I was supposed to and two weeks later I was diagnosed with breast cancer. As an Ultra runner and someone who leads a fairly healthy lifestyle I never saw this coming. This was a complete shock to everyone in my family.

    Lumpectomy

    Procedure or Surgery

I had a lumpectomy in early November 2012. The margins were not clear and the doctor wanted to check my lymph nodes so I underwent a second lumpectomy in mid November. My recovery was fairly uneventful (except for one episode of fainting), but I still ran my marathon two weeks after the second surgery.

    Went as Expected: Strongly Agree

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

My chemo (Taxol/Herceptin) was weekly for 12 weeks Dec - Mar. With the exception of a few sick days, I was able to continue working and work out. I did not want to be sidelined and miss out on any part of my life at all. Now I only receive the Herceptin every 3 wks, so getting back to regular life is a bit easier.

    Easy to Do: Agree
    Minimal Side Effects: Disagree
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Agree

To take the drug or not take the drug....

    Decision Point

As I approached the end of my first round of chemo, the doctor wanted to put me on Tamoxifen. After reading many message boards and talking with people who have taken the drug I made the decision to not accept the drug at all. The side effects are not worth it to me. It is about quality of life.
