Surgery to remove cancer that has spread

    Procedure or Surgery

I had a lobectomy of the lower lobe of my right lung. Surgeon told me that within a year I would not notice the difference in my capacity, except, as a competitive swimmer, I would not be able to swim as fast. He was spot on, now that I am 9 months past the surgery.

    Immunotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

Four infusion course of Yervoy running from October 30, 2012 through January 2 2013. Side effects were relatively easy to endure: some fatigure and general tiredness, itching and rash. The latter are still with me to some extent now in mid-April 2013

    External radiation

    Radiation

SRS to get rid of two brain tumors. Immediate side effects were minimal but the radiation probably led to radiation effects causing seizures. They were not minimal

Decision to go ahead with lung surgery despite potential tumors in brain.

    Decision Point

I was caught between two expert opinions as I started my journey. 1. Surgically remove the definite metastasis to my lung. 2. Don't do the lung surgery until you take care of the two suspicious leisions in the brain. But those are not certain. I decided to go with the lung surgery. It turned out that the supposed leisions were not melanoma after all. But I did have two show up in other places in a scan in October, two months later.

    Seizures

    Side Effects

One set in May 2013, the other July 2013. The seizures connected with growth of lesion in brain led to surgery in August

    Auto-Immune Disorders

    Side Effects

Ipi treatment resulted in Graves Disease and hypophysitis both autoimmune disorders. I also had seizures, which are 5 times more likely in those with autoimmune disorders. I'm 14 months and counting without melanoma recurrence, so I'm not unhappy I took ipi but wish anti-PD1 had been available at the time, since that would have been first choice.

    External radiation

    Radiation

At the first no problems. Radiation however led to eventual swelling effect which called for surgery on the brain.

    Surgery

    Procedure or Surgery

November 2014. Lesion on brain. Unsure whether cancer or not. Operation found radiation effect but no cancer. What was there was removed. Month recovery. No driving, swimming, intense exercise. Short stay in hospital. No complications. Good to know cancer is dormant. Better to operate than to take a chance. May have saved me from seizures, which were probably caused by radiation damage in past.

    Minimal Recovery: Neutral/NA

    Radiation

I had two weeks of radiation (5 separate sessions) to radiate a metastasis to the small bowel, between the duodenum and the pancreas. It had taken a while to locate it exactly for a biopsy, but it had probably been present for a year. The tumor was less than 2 cm. I will find out whether the radiation was successful in shrinking it late next month after giving it time to work. The radiation itself is a difficult procedure to go through because of the need to be absolutely still on account of the exactitude necessary. But side effects during and after the two weeks have been minimal.
