    Surgery

    Procedure or Surgery

I had surgery at Sloan Kettering in NewYork July 13, 2012. 14 hour surgery. Two surgeons one for the cancer and other plastic! Spent two weeks in Sloan than 5 weeks in rehab. Rehab because a flap was taken from my calf for my left face cheek and had to get walking again! Had a feeding tube and trach in my neck! Now I weaned myself off feeding tube two months ago tube comes out next week when I go to NY for my check up! Trach is gone hole is healed and talking again! Left with a piece of my hose missing the left side! Plastic surgeon won't touch the nose because he needs a lining from inside my mouth for the nose and he won't touch it because he does not want to hurt the flap, which is fine, he said their dental dept will take a look and probably make a,prosthetic for my nose he said you will never know its not your real nose! Lost top teeth except for,1 molar left on top and about nine teeth on bottom! I mange to eat most everythingI. I am cancer free when the pathology. Report came back and when I went for my first scans months later with a PET and CT scan that was cancer free also! So far so good!

    External radiation

    Radiation

I went for thirty radiation treatment at Sloan Ketterings site in Basking Ridge NJ. I live about an hour away in NJ but it was so much better than going to New York! I hate. going to New York! $100.00 day for gas tolls and parking! Having all my scans at basking Ridge NJ. All Sloan Kettering doctors are all connected by computer! So all my appointments and test results all my doctors know at the same time! Communication at Sloan is so fantastic they are the greatest!

    Body part/function

    Loss

I lost a piece of my calf for a flap they used for my face and the left side of my nose has an opening! Also lost most teeth but they will not be able to put in dentures or implants because of my flap!

    Jaw bone damage (osteonecrosis)

    Side Effects

They had to use a piece of my tibia in my maxillary bone! I also have no saliva! Radiation took away my salivary gland function! Mouth is always dry! I walk around with water all the time helps a little! Tried Biotene products I found them worthless!

Spent five weeks in a rehab hospital for my leg in order to walk again

    Other Care

When they took the large piece of my calf and tibia I was not allowed to lower my leg for weeks! So I needed rehab for that also my shoulder and neck area where they took out lymph nodes in my neck that were suspicious but turned out negative! Nothing metastasized the cancer stayed just in my left face area no other parts of my body had the cancer I was guite lucky! So rehab helped getting my shoulder muscles back!

After head and neck surgery in 2012 I had prostate cancer surgery in 2017! I am so lucky that everything worked out fine!
