    Implant chemotherapy port

    Procedure or Surgery

What was supposed to be a "routine" Procedure was anything but, routine...I was not sedated for the port implant surgery... I was terribly anxious. I got through the surgery, returned home to recoup and within 48 hrs. had a fever, increasing pain and swelling at the port side. notified the surgeon, was told it was normal and to take extra strength Tylenol...I continued to worsen over the next 48 hrs. suffering from a fever, pain, swelling, headache. nausea and acute edema. I called my oncologist and was immediately instructed to get to his office...a quick blood test revealed a severe case of Septicemia...I was hospitalized, tests were conducted including an ultra-sound showed a severe internal infection caused by the port implant. immediate surgical removal of the port, IV antibiotics, pain meds and a week long hospital stay ensued...I continued on very strong antibiotics for over a month once released. I was so sick that my chemo had to be discontinued and my immune system had become so compromised that I repeatedly acquired viruses....colds, flu, bronchitis etc...it has been 4 months since the initial port surgery and I still have not been able to resume my chemo...
