Total shock when diagnosed as I was there for a 'well woman' exam with no symtoms to speak of.

    Oh No

Sept 2011 went in for annual well woman exam and bloodwork. Next day was told bloodwork in and that I was severely anemic and needed to go to hospital asap for transfusion. well, they kept me as I needed 4 units! the next morning an oncologist visited me and gave me the horrible news that I had acute myeloid leukemia and needed to start aggressive right away. I was devastated. This was certainly NOT a 'well woman' report card......and my journey began.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

Induction therapy consisted of Ara-C and Idarubicin. Stayed in hospital for five weeks. While there contracted several infections....bacterial infection, streppa cocci, pneumonia, picc line infection, blood clot, and severe mouth sores. the chemo was pretty pain free but these infections kept me on watchful eye, low blood pressure and very low CBC's. dischsrged after 5 weeks and returned for three consecutive months, a week each, for more Ara-C for consolidation therapy. Bald and beautiful...ha ha.

Hard to live with a cancer that does not statically have a good mortality rate. Finding a stem cell donor is near impossible and that is where the cure lies.

    Drug Therapy or Medication

I have been on Dacogen chemo for ten months since relapse and the plan is indefinitely unless a stem cell donor shows up.
