    Diagnosed

    Oh No

My husband called me when I was on the way out of town for a business trip and told me they found a tumor on his pancreas. Needless to say, I turned around immediately and met him at the hospital for more testing, which confirmed the pancreatic cancer diagnosis. He has a stint put in to allow bile to drain. The surgeon in this small-city hospital told him it was inoperable and recommended palliative care only. We did not accept that recommendation and, after much research, made appointments with 3 surgeons in large hospitals in the Chicago area. All 3 of them said it was operable!

    Surgery

    Procedure or Surgery

My husband did very well with the Whipple procedure. It is a huge surgery and can have lots of complications. He had some trouble with fevers and drainage, but thankfully is able to eat without any problems. Two months after the surgery, he is able to walk 2 miles--and is well enough to start chemo.

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

After more than two months of chemo, my husband has had minimal side effects. He is more tired than usual and had a bout with cellulitis, but so far he is still working part time and feels well.

    Radiation

He started radiation this week. He has had the return of some of the stomach pains or cramping that he had after the surgery. He's also had some digestive issues. If it doesn't get any worse, he'll be OK. But I am a little worried that he's had four out of 28 treatments and already affected!
