BC diagnosis, thankful it's considered early

    Oh No

At a yearly physical, PA noted skin under left breast sl thicker and with larger pores. On 6-9-10 mammogram revealed mass. Immediate ultrasound with biopsy revealed cancer with metastsis to an axillary node. Radiologist was great and said immediately that it would be a lot of work but I would end up ok. He called the next day with diagnosos of ILC, with an appnt the next day with a surgeon. He didn't ask if this would fit into my schedule. My mom had bilateral BC and I just knew I would have it someday. Unfortunately lobular is difficult to diagnose as it forms more of a spider web and not a lump. Surgeon estimated this cancer to be about 4 years old with 2 mammograms missing it. Thermograms or MRIs can detect it better. This made a BMX an easy decision, especially as ILC often occurs in other breast. I did not reconstruct as I was 60 and hate pain and being a patient.

    Double Mastectomy

    Procedure or Surgery

Had a BMX with 12 axillary nodes removed. I requested Propofol and got the go ahead from anesthesia when surgeon said OR would be under 2 hours. I have no nausea or other side effects with this drug. Was surprised that pain was minimal, they inject long acting pain med to get you through 1st night. Since the surgery is on the surface, none of your bodily functions are interrupted. I went home the next day and did well. The biggest pain was the Jackson-Pratt drains. I had 3 and they were annoying. I had a lot of drainage and had them for a couple weeks and then has multiple aspirations of seromas. Luckily I felt numb so it was painless.
