    Diagnosed

    Oh No

Summer, 1996. There was no prior cancer in our family. It was our running joke that of all that could/did happen, we were Cancer-Free.

    Surgery

    Procedure or Surgery

The day after her diagnosis. My mom was one of the few eligible for the Whipple Procedure. While that was terrific news, what the surgeons found during the surgery made the news very grim.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

Gemzar...one of the only drugs for this killer, past and present. Don't think it had any beneficial effect. It is the reason the Jordan-Reigger Fund was created, and the reason I continue to join groups like this today.

    Internal radiation

    Radiation

This had no beneficial effect for my mother, but nor did it cause significant, additional troubles, either. We were told the chemo + radiation bought my mom an extra 6 months. Perhaps that is true. Whatever the case, I am obviously grateful for every minute I had with her for our almost 25 years together.

Sally Goddard Stearns Mills passed away peacefully on April 4, 1997, in Fairlawn, Ohio in hospice care. She enjoyed whiskey sours and all of her family around her in her final days.
