    Diagnosed

    Oh No

My husband is diagnosed with small cell lung cancer. PET shows in blood, spine and lung. Cat Skan (with image) shows none in head/brain area. Minimal damage to spine/hip area. They say this is a good sign and gives 70% chance.

Three days of two drugs for Chemo

    Procedure or Surgery

Beginning today with two drugs and then one drug for two more days. This will tell them how radical and long our Chemo will be and if pills or IV's. Wanted to ask more questions but don't know what to ask.

    Went as Expected: Strongly Agree

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

Sept. 21, 2011. Day one. Using Etoposide and Carboplatin. Day two and three using Etoposide alone. Next chemo on Oct. 12, 2011. Update: After three days of chemo; and one month later, beginning to lose hair but no other side effect. Good appetite. Pain in arm/shoulder unsure of what this is. 9/21/11 at hospital with IV drip for three day treatment. 10/12/11 Day clinic with IV drip of both meds. Taking home pills of Etoposide to be taken for next 2 days. Shot on 4th day for white cells and bones. 11/4/11 Repeat of last treatment. Took xray on this day. Saving Scans for end. Just want comparison from first xray. 12/2/11 Repeat of last treatment. Zometa also given with day one of IV Chemo to help bones. Comparison shows cancer gone from lung. Will continue treatment for 2 more times at three week intervals.

Anemia (low red blood cell counts)

    Side Effects

After first treatment beginning to lose hair after two weeks and anemic. Pain in left arm/shoulder; but cancer in right lung. More tired. 21 days later received IV of both drugs. Came home to take Etoposide pills for two days and shot for White Blood Cells on third day. Still eating often, but like a bird. Very, very weak and dizzy. Using walker to get around due to falling twice. I see that the thought pattern is fuzzy. After 3 days of falling down, dizzy, sleeping and pain in ankles; he is moving around and pain has eased. Dr. does not want to give anything for pain due to wanting to save narcotics for future. Does not want to become immune to pain meds. After 4 treatments. No pain. Appetite picking up. Ensure helped to maintain weight. Very little dizziness but very weak. Sleeps a lot. Staying awake and "walking" a lot more. Looks stronger overall.

    Cancer is shrinking

    Celebration

Dec. 2, 2011 had report on X-Ray. Half way point of treatment; doctor decided on simple x-ray to compare with first x-ray. Saving Scans for end of treatment. Explained that this course of 6 treatments would continue, no matter what, and want to save the body from too many scans. Took my two daughters with us. Scared of the results. Doctor told us that there was no sign of mass in lung. IT IS GONE! Will continue with two more rounds of Chemo and then do a Pet Scan. That will put us first part of January 2012 to finish chemo and do scan. What elation/celebration!!!! August 2012 had CT, PET and Bone Scans. Nothing in brain or liver. Monthly IV of Zometa for strengthening of bone. Is laying in spine and hip area. Couple spots showed up on a few ribs. Zometa is holding it back.

    Cancer is back/Recurred

    Oh No

In the last week my husband couldn't keep his legs under him and had pain in back area. Today (Sept. 11, 2012) took him to doctor and had to use a wheel chair to get him out of the vehicle. For the last week his walking and pain got progressively worse. They admitted him to hospital and did an MRI. Shows cancer has wrapped around spine. Will know tomorrow if radiation and/or surgery. Nothing in the brain or elsewhere. Still in bone, only.

    Internal radiation

    Radiation

Sept. 25, 2012 last day of radiation of spine. Ten days.Surgery was expected but told not needed. Radiation did it's job. Sept. 26th. Home Health came by to sign us up for therapy. Out of the wheel chair and back in the walker. Determined to walk without aides again. Smile. Therapy should help. Been on step down steroids. Eating like a horse. No burning whatsoever from radiation. Just redness on his back with no tenderness. Celebration. Back to Oncology Oct. 9th for follow up to see what next plan will be.
