Surgery through the anus to remove tumor

    Procedure or Surgery

Glad they could remove what they could, and finally feeling a little better. On to round two the PET/CT. The warm showers are helping relieve the pain after...well you know. Learning what to eat and what not to already...

    Diagnosis and staging

    Oh No

Well the results are in and I guess my stage is IIIB because there is a lymph node involved.

    Radiation

Trying to get the radiology oncologist lined up.. this seems to be the hard part to get this treatment started. 2 more visits, one a consult and one a measuring dry run, then we will be good to go...I hate this waiting around.

    Chemotherapy and radiation combined

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

Will be having chemo with 5-FU (something about that abbreviation says it all cancer!) on day 1-4 and 29-32, shot of mitomicyn on day 1 and 29, concurrent with 5 weeks of radiation 5 days a week. Will fill in the blanks later...

    Radiation and chemotherapy together

    Radiation

Day 4-combined radiation chemo Day 3. The insertion of a picc line on Day 1 did not go well. 2 hours of poking and prodding by a nurse (who was getting experience!!!), finally was sent to the right department - interventional radiology- at the hospital and it took 10 minutes and was painless. I broke down both physically and emotionally after the 2 hour nurse fiasco in ASU. Walked out!...Thank goodness for my nurse navigator stepping in! Chemo had to be rescheduled to day 2, and will have to go to the hospital in Portland for the removal of the picc on Saturday. My med onc doctor will be speaking with the hospital to avoid this in the future. Seems they do ASU first try as protocol and then send to IR...not good! Will change!!! He was not aware that this particular hospital had such an archaic practice. Chemo has gone well, a bit tired and some chest pressure due to the picc line, but so far all is well...on to day 4! I am beginning to feel the burn but just in the area of the tumor...this is a good thing!

    Hair loss (alopecia)

    Side Effects

Week 3 DONE! My long blonde hair has started to come out in handfuls. I opted not to cut it short as I wanted to have it as long as I could and they said it might not fall out, just thin. I have ordered two wigs and a couple of hats. Think I will be styling in the new do and Stetson! It is only hair after all....

    Fatigue (tiredness)

    Side Effects

Week 3, I am less energetic than normal, and I am noticing that I really need a nap after lunch. Could be the every two hour bathroom breaks at night too, a good 8 hour stretch of sleep would be most welcomed at this point.

    Diarrhea

    Side Effects

Week 3, into week 4, diarrhea, pain, burning and a yeast infection...hope they are right that the side effects of radiation will peak at week 3 then level off. I think I have the immodium schedule figured out now, and am eating cheese which seems to help solidify things.

    Toto Washlet toilet seat installed!!!

    Other Care

The most amazing toilet seat! Washes front and rear, with settings perfect for peri care, and then dries with cool-warm air as controlled by the remote! This is a fantastic thing for taking care of business without the use of paper or soft wipes, both of which I had to give up! Before this seat, I would have to jump in the shower or resort to the sitz contraption they gave me...All the settings are adjustable and the soft warm water spray is so relaxing! This was a gift, but if you are interested, look at Toto's website. I am so thankful for good friends!

    Celebration

After the endoscopy/colonoscopy last week the surgeon has told me that the tumor appears to be gone! And they have determined the cause of the painful bowel movements...a huge step forward!

    Pain

    Side Effects

Pain when having a bowel movement. It was lasting for hours after. And having 6-8 poops per day wasn't helping. Doctors had me start fiber meds and use Rectiv (nitroglycerine ointment) twice a day for 4 weeks. It was burning the very tender skin. Switched to Diltiazem cream and this seems to be helping as long as I eat the right foods...trial and error there. The diarrhea has stopped and the stools have lessened as has the pain after. Still hurts to poop, and some days are better than others. I am tired of being tied to the bathroom though. Every time I start to do something energetic I have to go!!

user avatar GregP_WN shared a photo media post Our friend and fellow Whatnexter @sue57 has some extra Anal Cancer survivor bracelets she would like to give away, she says: Dear Anal Cancer Survivors, patients and caregivers: Having survived anal cancer, I wanted a bracelet too, to let the world know that not all cancer is pink. The colors for anal cancer are purple and teal and are recognized by the anal cancer foundation and other groups around the world. I started to order one, but couldn't find a purple and teal one, so I designed this bracelet and ended up with 200! I would like to share them with you! They are free and no postage costs, all you have to do is contact me at acsurvivor @ gmail . com with your address and I will send one out to you! I will not share your information with anyone.
