    Diagnosed

    Oh No

One day almost two years ago I remember texting my husband and telling him how good life was. I was recovering from gallbladder surgery for gallstones and was starting to feel great. The next day I went on my computer and was looking at lab results etc. that are posted by my HMO online and I happened to see pathology results and clicked on it. My pathology results said I had Gallbladder cancer T2. My life has never been the same again. I had need even heard of gallbladder cancer.

    Surgery

    Procedure or Surgery

After being diagnosed with GB cancer T2 had a liver resection at UCLA.The care there was excellent and my surgeon was amazing. I was in the hospital for 7 days. I did have some pain and some discomfort, but overall the surgery was not as bad as I expected. The worst part of the whole thing was waiting on the pathology reports to determine if the cancer had spread. On the 5th day I was told that the report showed no spread to lymph nodes or other organs, clean margins were obtained. I recovered little by little each day after coming home and within a month I was able to drive and get around slowly.

    Went as Expected: Agree
    Minimal Recovery: Strongly Disagree
    Minimal Side Effects: Strongly Disagree
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Neutral/NA

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I was on a chemo pump for 6 weeks along with radiation. Some doctors suggested chemo as an extra precaution and some said not to do it. There is no information to tell if chemo is helpful for microscopic cells that may be left behind with gallbladder cancer. I choose chemo. as I wanted the best chance of survival. The 5fu pump made me sick to my stomach and tired but it was not too bad. After the month of the pump and chemo I started xeloda pills daily and within two weeks I was terribly sick and weak. I got so sick one day that I was put in the hospital and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, which I was told was caused by the chemo and the trauma to my body. I was switched from xeloda to gemzar for another 4 months. I tolerated the gemzar okay with the biggest side effect being fatigue and nausea. I did work through treatment and took only days off to go to chemo.

    Easy to Do: Disagree
    Minimal Side Effects: Disagree
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Strongly Disagree

    Finished treatment

    Celebration

I finished treatment last year and I did celebrate with a vacation. I was really happy to be done with chemo. I have been having scans every 6 months and I continue to be NED. I am approaching two years and I am praying for the best. I wish I could find more people that have had GB cancer, as I feel isolated and lonely at times. This is a difficult cancer as there are so few people to talk .
