    Decided to shave my head

    Decision Point

Clung to having some hair on my head for first two months of my chemo. Kept a hat on most of time and was forever picking up fallen hairs. Finally decided to have my son-in-law shave my head . Don' know why I waited so long.

Had a melt down at the infusion clinic today

    Oh No

Went in for my Taxol IP infusion today and after four failed attempts to access the abdominal port , to prove. I am only human, had a melt down. Could not stop crying, not with pain but with frustration. Turns out my port had flipped position, who knew? My husband , bless him, requested something for anxiety which I am sure my poor infusion nurses were only too relieved to give me. I told them the medicine knocks me out when I take it at home so they only gave me half the dose they would have, thank goodness, by IV push just before taking me over to the radiology department to check port placement. I remember the ride to the radiology waiting room but not the 20 min. wait time since I apparently fell asleep in the wheelchair. My apologies to all the other people present, I must have been quite the site. Was roused by husband and radiologist ,still drowsy. The port was painlessly repositioned and accessed, then I was returned to the infusion center where I finished my chemo treatment. Apologies abounded but as I said earlier, I am only human.

Low white blood cell counts (neutropenia)

    Side Effects

Last two weeks unable to finish final round of chemo because of white blood count. Dr. Finally ordered shot, once daily for five days to get the count up. Intermittent bone pain with shots but only bad for one day. The shots worked and was able to have two treatments this past week with only one to go.

    Research Study

    Decision Point

Signed consent forms today to be part of a national research study to find out if a change in diet and exercise in women with my type of cancer has an effect on the length of time I am cancer free following my initial treatment.I will participate in this study for two years with long term follow up.This study will involve approximately 1070 women. Hopefully the results will be helpful for everyone.

    Drug Therapy or Medication

Enjoying this Easter up in the mountains and watching a light snow fall this morning. Know many in the Midwest and East are very tired of the snow but for California any precip is welcomed. Suppose to rain, heavy at times, tomorrow, I say bring it on but I am afraid it is a case of too little too late. Wishing all better days ahead.

    Birth

    Celebration

Continuing on my " new normal" journey. This past week experienced my first Swedish full body massage. Had promised myself to have new experiences in this post chemo life and this was my first. Not too expensive, not too daring but completely new to me. Not one to pamper myself so this was an eye opener.Went to a fancy salon at a hotel. They served me infused water and offered fresh fruit, tea and coffee. I showered first then changed into a soft cuddly robe and sandles. While waiting, could have used a Sauna room, Steam room ( less heat) or colorfully lit meditation room but by the time I was oriented to all of these it was time for the massage. My husband, who has always been my rock, was with me for his first massage also. The experience for me was an eye opener. From the tips of my toes to the top of my head we were massaged for an hour. I called out to my husband a couple of times, he assured me he was ok but heard him groan several times ( he is stiffer than I am). Afterwards I was so relaxed wanted to take a nap . My husband, not so much. He admitted the massage helped his stiff neck but was never really able to relax. So a new experience. I plan to have another massage sometime in the future. My husband ? Unfortunately this was a one time only, did it for me, experience. Thanks Honey!

    Milestones

Today is the 9th of August, two days before my granddaughter's 7 th birthday, and exactly five years since hearing those terrible words,“ you have cancer.” I still get scanxiety and guess when exam times roll around I always will, but feel very blessed that I have had these five years and hopefully many more surrounded by family.
