    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

Didn't expect such nasty side effects just yet esp. since I was told they were well tolerated. I am receiving Carboplatin, Pemetrexed, Zometa (broken ribs), Avastin, and last but not least an injection of Neulasta a few days later. Severe nausea, joint and bone pain, severe chills and shaking after shower, constipation - then diarrhea. Is this typical?

    External radiation (Stereotactic)

    Radiation

1.5 hours of stereotactic radiation for small brain metastasis. Lorazepam helped me tolerate that awful mouthpiece.

    Fatigue (tiredness)

    Side Effects

After 2 chemo treatments finding that I am nauseated and anorexic for 5 days after treatment. Very difficult to eat. Sometimes 7-up, crackers and applesauce will work. The Emend only held me for 2.5 days and didn't help the anorexia. I keep trying to regain lost weight between treatments. Fatigue really hit after this second chemo treatment. Slept most of the time for 5 days and now find I really have to take it easy and pace myself. It's hard not being able to do what needs to be done. I live alone so no partner to help with the house cleaning, yard work etc. Friends have offered help but I hate to ask friends to clean my house. False pride?

    Second Opinion

    Other Care

I sought a second opinion from a thoracic surgeon because my oncologist told me that my Stage IV lung cancer was inoperable due a small metastasis (5 mm) in the brain. The surgeon discussed an option for surgery related to "oligometastasis." (one distant metastasis). I'll have a repeat PET and brain MRI to determine if there has been any further spread. If not, suspicious lung and thoracic lymph nodes will be biopsied via VATS surgery and if not they're not cancerous can do a lobectomy at the same time. Have to wait awhile until I finish chemo. It's a glimmer of hope but no guarantees.
