    Double Mastectomy

    Procedure or Surgery

I had a nipple-sparing double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. I did this with the hopes of helping to prevent recurrence in the second breast, which turned out to be a good idea since I tested positive for the BRCA-1 gene.

Lumpectomy vs. mastectomy vs. double mastectomy with/without reconstruction

    Decision Point

I chose double mastectomy with reconstruction and then later found out I tested positive for the BRCA-1 gene

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I am currently undergoing four rounds of TC Chemo (Taxotere (Docetaxel) and Cyclophosphamide). I described my symptoms as minimal as I have only had mild nausea and exhaustion. Ginger candy helps with those periods of nausea when they occur, which is rare. Two rounds down, two more to go! Praise God! :)

    Cancer is back/Recurred

    Oh No

After finding a lump in my neck, I went to see a doctor in Urgent Care who ordered an ultrasound and a blood test. The ultrasound showed that the lump was three swollen lymph nodes so I was referred to the ENT doctor who ordered a CT scan of my neck and my oncologist ordered a biopsy of the lymph nodes. The biopsy was positive for breast cancer, which the CT scan showed as well.

    Cancer has spread/Metastasized

    Oh No

My oncologist confirmed the results of the biopsy, placed me on the chemo drug, Ibrance, ordered a full body bone scan and, basically, a ct scan of my torso, and referred me to a Radiology Oncologist for radiation. The Radiology Oncologist ordered a PET-CT scan. The results showed that the cancer had traveled from the lymph nodes in my neck down to the lymph nodes in my abdomen and that I have a large mass under my arm, all on the left side, and a nodule in my right lung. The tests did not show any cancer in my organs or bones.

    External radiation

    Radiation

I started radiation therapy to key spots on the left side of my body on 11/01/2018. It hasn’t been painful but I have noticed a feeling of tightness in my left shoulder and upper arm. I read that this is common with radiation therapy and recently started doing the stretching exercises recommended by the article I found. Otherwise, no major symptoms. Maybe some sensitivity in one of my teeth on the left side. Last treatment will be 11/14/2018.

    Targeted therapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I was taking Ibrance+Faslodex from 10/04/2018 until it started to fail in September 2019. It was successful in slowing down the growth of my cancer until it wasn’t.

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

After progression, I was started on Carboplatin+Gemzar. My hair started growing back on this combo. They gave me nausea medicine before treatment and some to take as needed. I did get some nausea two days later, once ending up in the hospital due to fever, but the nausea medicine helped and I usually only get nausea if I don’t drink enough water after treatment. Treatment had to be cancelled a few times due to low white cells and low platelets so they prescribed me an immune booster to take for 5 days after treatment. Gemzar burns for a minute or two if you have tiny veins but helped for them to slow down the rate of administration and put on a heating pad. The area is tender for like a day or two afterwards. I haven’t noticed any burning for the last few rounds though.

    Breakthrough

    Celebration

I found out on 08/12/2020 that I have had a complete metabolic response to Carboplatin+Gemzar and now have no evidence of active disease. I have to finish one more round for total of six and then I go into maintenance phase where I will only be on Gemzar.

    Hospitalization

    Other Care

I went into health crisis and was hospitalized for two days in 10/2019 after it was discovered that I had extensive blood clots in both of my lungs and my lungs were shutting down. I was placed on oxygen and Lovenox to address the blood clots and difficulty breathing.

    Lovenox and oxygen

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

Extensive blood clots were found in both of my lungs so I was prescribed Lovenox in 10/2019 and I have to give myself shots twice a day. I hate giving myself shots but it must be done. I was placed on oxygen to assist with my difficulty breathing.
