    Problem with doctor

    Oh No

My ENT asked for a needle biopsy of my Thyroid becuase of nodules and ongoing horseness, my endo Dr. said NO, not needed. I saw the ENT again in 6 months and he very firmly said I WANT A NEEDLE BIOPSY OF THIS THYROID!! So she did it, saying that if anything came up abnormal then I would have to get my thyroid out. DUHHHH!-That's the reason for a needle biopsy isn't it?? If there are abnormal cells, absolutely I want my thyroid out! She was sort of like, let's don't bother this if it doesn't bother us! Needless to say, I have a different ENDO doctor now, since I had a 9mm lesion on the right side of my thyroid and 3 micro lesions on the left. So don't always go by what one doctor says, push on and get the proper diagnosis. Had I not demanded that needle biopsy my Thyroid cancer would have probably spread to other organs.

    Internal radiation

    Radiation

I took I-131 which is a capsule that has been irradiated. You have to be on a VERY strict diet before this treatment to eliminate all iodine in your body. The irradiated iodine attacks any remaining thyroid cells and destroys them. Thyroid cells can actually break away from the thyroid and re-attach anywhere else in your body, so to kill off all thyroid cells you'll need this with a thyroid scan later to be sure all thyroid tissue is gone. During the 3 weeks after ingesting this capsule you have to be pretty much alone in your house, which can be hard, but necessary, you cannot cook and must use plastic utensils and dishes, flushing the toilet multiple times too to get the radiation out of your house. I had a funny thing happen. My Thyroid was removed at at Naval Hospital aboard Camp LeJeune in Jacksonville, NC. I took the I-131 shortly after surgery and when I had to go back to the Naval Hospital for a check, I set off all the radiation alarms about 300 yards before the check point to enter. They stopped ALL traffic entering the base, so I got out of my car waving a letter from my endo about the I-131. They came back, checked it and let the traffic go. I was surprised that their equipment was so sensitive that it could pick up radiation so far away! But way to go USMC!

    Weight gain

    Side Effects

I have not been a very good patient about watching my weight, but in my simple mind I decided that my body had been thru quite a bit with the surgery and treatment afterwards, so I did gain about 40 pounds. So now 5 years later, I've got to get serious about losing this extra person I am carrying around!

    Anniversary

    Celebration

I'm 5 years out from my Thyroid cancer now and I really want to celebrate big time, but my gyno found some atypical cells in my last pap smear, I am to go back in 6 months for a re-check. This scares me alot, but my faith tells me to just relax that there was probably some little something in the pap that just wasn't right, maybe a yeast infections starting or something as simple as that. But I'll have it checked, you betcha and with lots of prayers it will be okay, so keep me and my atypical cells in your prayers too please!
