    Cancer has spread/Metastasized

    Oh No

On the day I got the biopsy results I was told I was Gleason 8 and PSA 14. A few minutes later I had my first Lupron shot.

    External radiation

    Radiation

I had 43 treatments at 2:30 pm and had to drive 30 miles round-trip through Dallas traffic.I passed out for some unknown reason and had minor traffic accident only to pass out while with the Oncologist, at his office on another day. After that, my adult daughter drove me, just to be safe. I was also beginning my first round of three month Lupron injections.

    Hormone therapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

Lupron is a nasty chemical and it has almost truned me into a "middle aged female". Middle aged would at lest youthen me a few years, but the "hot flashes" are tough to take and alow me to empathise with my wife after all these years.

    Weight gain

    Side Effects

In spite of reducing my diet to that of a poverty-stricken third world starvation victim, I am still gaining unwelcomed weight due to Lupron.

    Sexual side effects

    Side Effects

I just wish I had ED and could be "cured" as easily as the TV ads claim. Lupron gave me the libido as of a 9 year old.

    Erection problems

What is an errection? Lupron beats any "blue pill" ever invented. The worst crime I could ever be accused of is "assault with a dead weapon".

    Hot flashes

    Side Effects

Lupron has given me increase empathy for my wife. Hot-flashes occur without warning. Some wise person said "Climate is what you expect and weather is what you get". I know I will have hot flashes, I just don't know when they will occur.

Perhaps the dry mouth contributes to my decreased ability to enjoy taste, but everything has begun to taste like cabbage.

    Seizures

    Side Effects

I have had epilepsy ever since I was injured while defending our country at age 22, so my neurologist has had to closely regulate my seizure medication and keep close contact with my PHP, DO, Oncologist and Urologist. Thanks to my Neurologist, I remain seizure-free.

    Depression/Anxiety

    Side Effects

My treatment team monitors my depression and anxiety closely. I don't know if I have situational depression due to being told I have cancer and situational anxiiety due to the same circumstamces, but I would feel "justified" if I could blame the Lupron. I have depression and anxiety anyway and my opinion does not count for much, so I will just go ahead and blame Lupron

    Decision Point

In January 2012 I had decided to discontinue Lupron for a few months, just to take a vacation from the side-efects. I had a serious talk with my Urologist and he told me about the horrible alternatives if I did not continue with the Lupron. I decided to allow him to administer the shot after looking a a picture of my new-born granddaughter. After much consideration, I realized who I am is not my body. I love my life, family, work and possibilities for the future. After internalizing that insight, I realized the only responsible thing for me to do is just take care of my body and follow the professional advice of the army of doctors I have accumulated who are all committed to my physical and emotional welfare, even when I am in a dark place and do not want to participate. I am a fortunate man. I have only missed one day of work since all this began. I had surgery that day and the doctor wouldn't discharge me from the hosptial in time to go to my office. Perhaps I am trying to do too much. I don't know. I do know my family love me and I love them and I take my patients as seriously as the doctors who give me treatment take my evential recovery seriously. (Yea, I am one of those people with a string of initials after my name. In consideration of the privacy of my patients I will not make public what those initials are, and I am fully licensed by the State of Texas.)

    Other

    Procedure or Surgery

Whatever I have seems to have invaded my back. The pain was so bad I could hardly walk. I was sent to a Pain Clinic and have had two steroid injections as a patient in the day surgery unit of the hospital as well as being prescribed a theraputic dose of hydrocodone. More pain interventions and actual surgery await me. At least I have regained my ability to walk due to the injections and intense Physical Therapy.

Granddaughter--9 lbs, 2 ounces. She was born while I was doing radiation and will be healthy enough to travel 2, 200 miles next week to meet her for the first time. She doesn't say too much over the telephone, but she has heard my voice.

    Loss

I have lost my long-held assumption that I would live forever, never age and would have plenty of quality time to do anything. Even though I am in the middle of treatment snd the doctors will never discuss my prognosis, I have more inner peace than at any time in my life and now enjoy the "loss" of life as I previously knew it. I have much to look forward to when I eventually recover.
