    Sentinel lymph node biopsy

    Procedure or Surgery

I had a wonderful team of doctors that I fully trusted with my treatment. Until the day of surgery, I was very confident in my decisions. On the day of surgery my sentinel biopsy was beyond the most painful thing ever done to me. Much worse than all the needle biopsies, MRIs, and childbirth. Worse yet, I specifically asked for medication to avoid this pain. I got a low dosage anti anxiety pill. I had a double mastectomy and DIEP reconstruction. My surgery lasted over 12 hrs. I had no pain upon waking up other than my arms. In the hospital for 5 days with pain never being reduced to under a 4 on a 0-10 scale. I am not a wimp but felt pain management was not a priority for my team of doctors. From the beginning, I asked the breast surgeon to preserve lymph nodes. She assured my husband that she only took 1 sentinel from left side and 2 from the right for biopsies. I found out four weeks later after weeks of complaining of severe arm pain that she actually removed 16 lymph nodes. Discovered this from pathology report. I see her next week. I am furious. She has yet to explain this to me. I feel violated and forever damaged. Need to figure out what to say to her when I see her for my next appointment. Coming to this site to get answers. Everyone I talk to seems to hold doctors in such high regard. I am thankful for the wonderful ones that have been honest with me but cannot excuse the ones that have abused the trust I gave them.
