    Diagnosed

    Oh No

Stage 3 lung cancer, I had 5cm mass in left lower lobe and 5 lymph nodes along the esophagus. I'm a RN that worked with cancer and hospice patients, I thought I'm a goner at first and I cried and was so mad at myself, for not quit smoking. I lost both parents and a couple of grandparents to lung cancer. I knew what smoking would do. So I put it in God's hands. I went from my family doctor to the pulmonolgist, who ordered the biopsy. Within a few days of biopsy was at oncologist and he did the PET, MRI of the brain, that same week I started treatment.

    Implant chemotherapy port

    Procedure or Surgery

I started chemo without a port. It was so painful I had them inplant the port. Best thing I could have done.

    Chemotherapy and radiation combined

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I was tired before treatment, because of the cancer. I was tired all the time and did almost nothing once I started treatment. I was set up for 40 radiation treatments. Monday through Friday for 8 weeks. I took chemo once a week, but was given 2 different chemos partial doses while I was taking radiation.

    Easy to Do: Strongly Disagree
    Minimal Side Effects: Strongly Disagree
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Strongly Disagree

    External radiation

    Radiation

I had lymph nodes along the esophagus involved so about the 20th treatment I was having swallowing problems, my skin was burned up. I ended up in the hospital with vomiting then pneumonia, so by time I got out, I went right back into treatment and did well. I'm a RN also, so I knew how staying hydrated would make a difference, that was the best thing any one taking radiation can do. DRINK LOTS OF WATER!!!!

    Painless Experience: Strongly Disagree
    Minimal Side Effects: Strongly Disagree
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Strongly Disagree

    Bone fracture or break

    Side Effects

I had a allergic reaction to one of the chemo's, it landed me in the hospital over night. A year after treatment I fractured my left lower leg. I had to have a rod and 2 screws to fix it. I continue to have pain from the leg, not sure if the cancer treatment has magnified the side effects of the fracture. I wish I had taken vitamins for the bones. I guess I thought I wouldn't survive the cancer and did not do somethings I should have like vitamins and exercise. One thing that I did do right was DRINK LOTS OF WATER!

    Decision Point

After my 20th radiation and 8 weeks of chemo, I ended up in the hospital. I had made up my mind that I WAS NOT going to take any more radiation. My oncologist sat me down and told me," radiation gives ya more bang for your buck". I believe between God and radiation, I'm cancer free.
