    Implant chemotherapy port

    Procedure or Surgery

I watched my husband of 26 years die of small cell lung cancer- so when the doctors found the tumor in my left lung- I felt like I was sentenced to death. However the doctors were able to remove lung and found no evidence that it spread any further. But what has been most disturbing about this disease is how much of a "business" it is. There are doctors whom are assigned to specific parts of my disease and body- but no one doctor that cares for me as a whole person. Our health care system treats the disease, but seems to have forgotten they are treating people.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I was blessed to have sought a second opinion in regard to chemo. My oncologist recommended 12 treatments. Johns Hopkins oncologist disagreed and reduced it to four cycles with a newer drug. While I always maintained I would never submit to chemo after watching my husband waste away on several courses, I feel like 4 one day treatments is doable. I go for round #3 Monday - I still have my hair and have only lost 15 lbs. I think I will make it! But I can't bel but wonder if the person next to me at the infusion center had the benefit of a second opinion.

    Chemo brain

    Side Effects

I suffered more side effects from the steroids they gave me than I did from the chemo. I hallucinated, could not sleep, had horrible hot flashes. The last treatment I refused to take them- while I had increased nausea I avoided the bad side effects. Of courses it was against doctors orders- he told me the regime works and cannot be changed to suit one person. Where is Marcus Welby MD when you need him?

Just wanted to share that I have graduated chemotherapy on Monday! I'm still hanging onto a thin crop of hair as a bonus!!!!! Thank God it's over- it's day 2 and I feel crappy but I know I will never be here again so it's easier to bare..... Now I get 3 months to catch my breath and then onto survivorship rehab
