    Misdiagnosed

    Oh No

In Ithaca I was told that I had a bruised cervix which would explain the excruciating pain.

    Decision Point

Pain became more severe, so after another "annual," I had my doctor at Kaiser Permanente take a look.

Kaiser said that it was a simple cyst and that it would go away on its own- that I wouldn't need follow-up because of my age.

    Decision Point

Pain persisted, spoke with NP at my school, who recommended another ultrasound and check up with another doctor in Brookline.

Doctor in Brookline suggested a bruised cervix, then proceeded to give me a lecture on safe sex and told me to keep a sex journal.

Back to NEC- multiple ultrasounds at Beth Israel- all showing more "cyst" and it not going away.

    Health insurance issue

    Oh No

On the day of my scheduled surgery, because I was newly married, the hospital had trouble verifying my married status (and eligibility), and canceled my operation while I was sitting in the waiting room. I would have to wait two more weeks before rescheduling.

    Fertility sparing surgery

    Procedure or Surgery

Omentectomy, removal of lymph nodes, biopsies of peritoneum and left ovary, removal of right ovary and tumor, removal of second small tumor in pelvis. 6cm primary tumor. The doctor didn't provide me with a lot of info, and sent my slides out for a second opinion.

    Job

    Loss

My job as a music teacher and auditioning for things (my career) has been put on hold. I quit my job with Keynotes, because I'm not allowed to drive, and I tire more easily and don't have the energy to teach long hours.

    Celebration

First post-op with Dr. A. today. Things went very well! Finally got a stage and grade (Stage IIB epithelial serous and a low grade). This apparently is great because it's such a slow growing tumor, and he just wants me to come in every few months for the next 5 years for CA-125, ultrasound, and check-up. It looks like I probably won't even need chemo. This is sooo goood! I feel like the luckiest person in the world. God is good. I'm wondering if I should get a second opinion, just in case. But maybe I should just take what he said and rejoice. I'm going to celebrate by eating an eclair.
