    Laparascopic colon surgery

    Procedure or Surgery

Husband tumor was removed from his sigmoid colon on 12/16. He complained about an aggravated pain in his lower back after spending 5 hours on the surgical table, including 3 hours of actual surgery. Severe back ache has persisted, but other side effects from the colon surgery were minimal to what might be expected. 5 days later, he developed severe chills, high fever & vomiting. Cat scan was taken and surgeon determined a pinpoint air leak. Resulting in 2nd surgery. Major risk involved.

    Pathology report

    Oh No

Pathology report showed 5 of 18 lymph nodes were cancerous and removed. Tumor on sigmoid colon larger than expected from PET scan and liver met about same size as one on colon. Surgery on metastasized liver within next few months.

    Partial Bowel Obstruction

    Oh No

Husband was having severe stomach pains and no output in ileostomy for several hours. Talked to surgeon and took husband to nearest emergency for Cat Scan resulting in mechanical bowel obstruction. 8 days later, obstruction finally resolved on its own. No surgery needed- thank God.

    Dehydration & Pancreatitis

    Oh No

My husband's symptoms were pain & swollen stomach, nausea, chills, fever and vomiting. Cat scan performed at nearest emergency hospital identified pancreatitis (inflamed pancreas) & detected no gall stones. My husband does not drink alcohol so likely caused by bowel surgery. This also explains his loss of appetite & rapid weight loss. Being treated with IV fluids & antibiotics. Cannot start chemo until he regains strength and weight.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

1st round of chemo - my husband tried to stay ahead of things with anti-nauseous meds and drinking fluids, but last two days experienced side effects that were rough. Went to infusion center on 4th day for IV fluids to prevent possible dehydration and Neulasta shot for low WBC.
