mastectomy vs quadrantectomy & reconstruction vs reduction

    Decision Point

I chose a quadrantectomy and reduction and remain confident with my choices. As it turned out, a mastectomy would not have given me better odds after the pathology report was returned and chemo was necessary regardless. Radiation too but that was already in the plan.

    quadrantectomy (large lumpectomy, one quadrant)

    Procedure or Surgery

Still processing the impact on my daily life. Had to stop teaching and I miss my students which impacts my emotional wellbeing. But, when I return after chemo, I expect this will have been a detour and I will resume my life where I was. But for now, like all cancer patients, I imagine we are not the same as we were before our diagnosis. The daily impact of my surgery (physical manifestation) is minimal to the emotional parts and the things that continue to be unveiled.

    Went as Expected: Agree
    Minimal Recovery: Neutral/NA
    Minimal Side Effects: Strongly Agree
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Disagree

    chemo and radiation

    Decision Point

Initially didn't think I would need chemo. Not much of a choice with TNBC. "Part of the choice" is accepting the new information. Today I start my first infusion 6-3-2019

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

Yesterday (8/5/2019) was #4 of 16 chemo treatments but the last of the AC chemo drugs. After three weeks rest, I begin 12 weekly doses of Taxol. Chemo has taken over my life routines because of the side effects and I also caught a virus that I can't shake because my immunity is low. Makes everything harder. I just miss being able to do more normal things. Fatigue and nausea and metal mouth are my worst enemies so I try to rest and find foods that I can tolerate. And, of course, I try to stay positive.

    Easy to Do: Strongly Disagree
    Minimal Side Effects: Disagree
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Strongly Disagree

    Implant chemotherapy port

    Procedure or Surgery

I was grossly underinformed about what this procedure entailed. Local anesthesia only. Uncomfortable head position and I started to feel it before they were finished. Such nice staff and they were so kind, but it was painful and hurt much more than I expected. Was supposed to be able to remove the dressing after two weeks but needed three for healing to be complete. I wasn't able to have the port in time for my first chemo and having for the second and more, well, I'm glad I have it. It feels unnatural having this lump in my chest, but it makes for easier hookup.

    Minimal Recovery: Disagree
    Minimal Side Effects: Strongly Agree
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Agree

    hair losss

    Loss

It's all in one's perspective. Losing my hair felt creepy when it started and my daughter took the clippers to me which was sweet and personal. Then she wanted me to do her long hair. Not easy for me to see her locks fall away but then her beau and my son joined in. They've been so supportive and I'm blessed. I also don't have to look at myself but when I catch my reflection, I'm still not recognizing who it is. Doesn't bum me out though anymore. Hair grows again. I just wish I felt better and wasn't having the chemo side effects. Ah, perspective.

could there be a way to check boxes instead of adding side effects individually?

    Side Effects

Maybe people search for individual side effects so it's helpful this way. Maybe I have too many side effects. :D
