    Surgery

    Procedure or Surgery

This was my first of 3 surgeries. I wasn't sure what to expect, but recovery the first time around seemed like a breeze compared to the second and third. I didn't have much pain or side effects.

    Internal radiation

    Radiation

The preparation for the radiation is almost as bad as the radiation itself. At the time, I had to be on a low iodine diet for 2 weeks prior to the radiation. It nearly did me in, ha! I wasn't a happy camper at all on that diet. After the radiation (which I received after my 2nd and 3rd surgeries), I was nauseous for a long time. My mouth felt like I was sucking on cotton. The smell of food make me sick to my stomach for months. During treatments, I had to be isolated from everyone due to the fact that I was radioactive. It sounds funny, and I often joke about it, but it's a lonely time. Sitting in a hospital bed, where EVERYTHING is wrapped in plastic wrap and no one can come visit. I watched alot of tv and read alot of magazines!

    Cancer is back/Recurred

    Oh No

My third recurrance was in July of 2005, the cancer had spread to my vocal cords. The doctor scraped off what he safely could without permantely harming my voice. I remember being so horse for weeks after my last surgery. Recovering was worse this time around. I was so sore and in a lot of pain. I had numbness in my neck/shoulder area for a while afterwards. I asked the doctor about it and he said it was from the trauma to that area.

    Lost loved one

    Loss

My grandmother, who had battled both breast cancer and liver cancer, died in August of 2005....a month after my 3rd and last surgery. She was my hero in every sense of the word. She knew, firsthand, what I was going through. Watching her succumb to this disease was heartbreaking.

    Internal radiation

    Radiation

My second round of radiation came after my 3rd surgery. I again had to follow the low iodine diet and was in isolation for a few days after treatment.
