    Oh No

Colonoscopy shows a carpet of polyps. Doctor thinks it is FAP. Anyone in the family with FAP? No Anyone in the family had colon cancer? No Internet research begins. Oh no is an understatement.

    Colon surgery (colectomy or hemicolectomy)

    Procedure or Surgery

Right now, my little sister is 2 weeks post op. She is not real mobile, has an IV 8 hours a day, and in a good bit of pain. Doctor said after the surgery that although her colon was huge, he thinks everything was contained. Cue sigh of relief. No definites until path report comes back.

    Oh No

Path report comes back. Cancer in 16/83 lymph nodes. Stage 3bN2. Crushing. Start looking for hospitals to get second opinion, but chemo and radiation are almost a definite. Survival rates start to mean something to us.

    Decision Point

Where are we going for second opinions? UPMC is where the surgery was. We like the doctors. 3 hour trip from home. Johns Hopkins has been responsive. 6 hour trip from home, but family is in the area. Kettering? Dana Farber? Does it make sense to plan to move closer to a major cancer institute?
