    Diagnosed

    Oh No

I was experiencing pain in my left shoulder and attributed it to a rotor cuff issue I knew about. It became unbearable so I went to emergency. They took and xray and didn't like what they saw, so they took a CT scan and indicated I either had pneumonia or lung cancer. Two months later, after a biopsy of the pleura of my upper left lung, I was diagnosed at stage 4.

    Targeted therapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

Markers on my cancer indicated that Tarceva would be the drug of choice to combat it. I began taking Tarceva in January of 2011 and within two months I had an ulcer in my esophagus. This was treated with Carafate suspension. The need to take these meds on an empty stomach, with a window of two hours before a meal or one hour after, along with other meds I take, had me on a 24 hour schedule with wake ups at 2AM and 5AM. Interrupted sleep was not fun.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

The Tarceva ceased working around February of 2012. This was discovered by a routine CT scan that showed a slight increase in size in the cancer lesion. As a result, I am now on a chemo program and just completed the second session. I am scheduled for four total treatments, at 3 week intervals. The type of drugs in use does not cause loss of hair, but DOES cause nausea and constipation in spades. For those I have medications, and they are proving to be partially effective.

    memory loss

    Other Care

As a result of recent memory loss, I am scheduled for an MRI tomorrow (7/19/2012) to see if cancer has moved to my brain. That will be a decision point whether I continue any treatment for any of the cancer.
