    Diagnosed

    Oh No

I had a mammogram in July 2011 and had to go and have a 2nd mammogram because there were calcifications seen on xray. The 2nd mammogram confirmed that a biopsy was needed. The radiologist called to tell me on Sept. 27, 2011 that the results of the biopsy was that I have non-invasive, stage 0 ductal carcinoma in-situ (dcis). I felt scared and shocked!

    Decision Point

My Primary Care doctor suggested I have a consultation with a surgical oncologist 1st and a medical oncologist 2nd. I didn't understand why it had to be in that order. The surgical oncologist showed me the x-ray while explaining my diagnosis, recommended treatments, side affects and recuperation time. My husband attended this consultation with me for support and just in case I missed something that was said. My gut feelings are telling me to obtain a 2nd opinion out of the health insurance network just for assurance. It will cost me more money, but I will feel better just knowing that a 2nd doctor gave me their opinion.

    Lumpectomy

    Other Care

2nd opinion received. Tomorrow, 11/4/11 I will have lumpectomy to remove cancer. The support group mtg. was good Tuesday night. I look forward to having the cancer and cells removed totally and moving forward with my life. All of this is too much. I just want to get my life back to normal. Some people are real XXX holes and uncaring. If cancer hits them, then maybe they would be more careful with their words. My gut instincts tell me to stay away from people that show they don't care. My instincts are usually right.

    Decision Point

On February 21st I decided to schedule my right breast mastectomy with a saline implant expander reconstruction surgery for Mar. 2nd. The entire process lasted from 9am Friday and I was discharged from the hospital approximately at 2:30pm the next day. I was in a lot of pain and used 2 bottles of Percocet but for the past week, I only take 2-4 Advil pills for the pain per day. Today, 3/30/12, I drove (for 20 mins.) for the 1st time and can lift my arm a little higher everyday. The breast health care nurses provided a lot of advice during recovery and overall, I did good according to my doctors. The decision to have this mastectomy came after careful thought of my health and my family and prayers; although I had stage 0 non-invasive DCIS, I didn't want to take the risk of the cancer spreading and having to have a 2nd lumpectomy with the chance of non-clear margins. My family and I are happy with this decision and I pray that all this will be a distant memory as a breast cancer survivor!

    Oxycotin/Percocet

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

Causes drowsiness and I experienced mild itchy skin which may be an allergic reaction; however, I ignored it and completed the dosages as instructed.

    Easy to Do: Strongly Disagree
    Minimal Side Effects: Agree
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Agree
