    To have surgery or not.

    Decision Point

Met with the surgeon on August 2, 2011 to discuss my situation. Again was told that he would be willing to remove part or all of my thyroid if I wanted to have the surgery. I decided to have a total thyroidectomy at that time due to the high rate of cancer in my family history (no one had thyroid cancer though).

    Diagnosed

    Oh No

November 29, 2011 I was told by the surgeon that I had minimally invasive follicular carcinoma of the thyroid and that it was stage 2 due to my age and the size of the tumor.

    Internal radiation

    Radiation

After 2 weeks of a low-iodine diet I received my RAI treatment on Jan 10, 2012 and was then isolated at home for 5 days. I was slightly nauseous for the first few days which I was told was from the medication I was given to protect my salivary glands. The second day of isolation my paratid glands swelled and were very painful even though I was taking the medication and sucking on lemon drops continuously. I hated the low-iodine diet!!

    follow up ultrasound of neck.

    Procedure or Surgery

In May I had my follow up ultra sound of the neck and it showed no cancer growth! By this time I was on 175 mcg of synthroid to suppress my TSH levels.

side effects from high dose of synthroid

    Oh No

In the end of May 2012, I started to have heat intolerance, abnormal fatigue, heart palpitations, and chest pain. Went to ER for chest pain and was told EKG and blood work were OK. I was experiencing PVC (preventricular contractions which are benign). Went to my endocrinologist and decided to do a two month trial of lowering the synthroid to 162 mcg to see if side effects improve.

in July 2012, I started experiencing pain in my R eye. Went to eye doctor and was told that I have dry eyes probably secondary to the RAI treatment. Started on artificial tears.

    L paratid swelling and pain

    Oh No

August 2012 I started to have swelling and pain in my L paratid gland which I was told can be a long term side effect of the RAI treatment. Back to sucking lemon drops!

    R parotid gland

    Oh No

9/9/12 Now my right parotid gland has been affected by my RAI treatment! Oh well. The discomfort is at least equal on both sides now!!! Also right now neither side is too bad. Just a little uncomfortable.
