    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I was given neoadjuvant chemotherapy to shrink tumors before surgery. My cocktails were adriamycin, cytoxan and taxol (ACT) delivered in 8 treatments at 2 week intervals. My oncologist and I shared a delightful, promising moment when after 2 weeks of the first treatment we could not feel any tumors! During the 4 months of chemotherapy I was able to perform my work as a Montessori preschool teacher, with a few minor adjustments, as well as drive myself the 1 hour travel to and from cancer center.

    Double Mastectomy

    Procedure or Surgery

Although my cancer was located on my left breast and lymph nodes, I elected to remove the right breast to lessen anxiety and create a new profile after reconstruction.

    External radiation

    Radiation

I received 28 treatments during a 2 month period. The skin of the treated area was very damaged and tender so I used alot of clear aloe and miaderm a few times a day. I became very picky about the fabrics I wore on my chest, even some cotton t-shirts were too rough!

    Debridement

    Procedure or Surgery

I experienced a complete surgery wound dihisence on the radiated side. In 30 minutes the skin opened from a small hole to extend the entire length of the incision. I call this my sci-fi morning.

    Latissimas Dorsi Flap Reconstruction

    Procedure or Surgery

4 months after breast reconstruction my radiated skin was not healed and beginning to tear on the very thin skin. This procedure involved removing the damaged skin and patching with a small island of skin from my back, as well as moving the latissimas dorsi muscle to my chest. My recovery was further complicated with severe fasciatis which caused much discomfort and pain. Myofascial release therapy is most helpful. My massage therapist says the every Latissimas Dorsi Flap Reconstruction patient should receive fascia release therapy.

    Breast Reconstruction (Implant)

    Procedure or Surgery

4 months after Latissimas Dorsi Flap reconstruction, just yesterday, the tissue expander was exchanged for a silicone implant. Since that surgery was only an hour procedure, I was able to use IV general anesthesia which made for a faster, less nausea recovery. No future surgeries are planned. Long ago I decided the nipple/areola reconstruction was not in the picture...imagine Barbi doll chest...no need to ever wear a bra again!
