    Surgery

    Procedure or Surgery

Total thyroidectomy resulted in permanent paralysis of right vocal cord. Also surgeon said "he got it all" when, in fact, the pathology report told the real story, which showed metastasis. My sleep stopped immediately after surgery. The vocal cord issue affected my professional career. My age at that time (53), the female hormones/emotional roller coaster, and my vocal cord paralysis intensified the entire process.

    Went as Expected: Strongly Disagree
    Minimal Recovery: Strongly Disagree
    Minimal Side Effects: Strongly Disagree

    RAI (i-131) 100 mCi

    Radiation

During the time I received the I-131, Thyrogen had not yet been approved. By the time, I was ready for my 1st annual follow-up and whole body scan, Thyrogen had been approved. What a difference is made not having to withdraw from my thyroid replacement hormone (Synthroid)!

    Painless Experience: Agree
    Minimal Side Effects: Neutral/NA
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Disagree

6 months after total thyroidectomy decided to attend National ThyCa Conference

    Decision Point

Had also been diagnosed with right vocal cord paralysis. after confirmed diagnosis of right vocal cord paralysis. Listened to several physicians highly experienced with thyroid cancer and vocal issues post surgery...this conference shed new light for me on the disease and my journey. So glad to have found thyca.org!

    Celebration

I am 7 years post surgery for Stage III Papillary Carcinoma and 6 years post vocal cord surgery (Silastic Medialization with Arytenoid Adduction). All hormones have leveled out. Still have some sleep issues, but life is good! Thyroglobulin is undetectable.
