    Oh No

I had noticed a large lump on the inside of my left thigh during the winter of[phone number redacted]. I had no pain or discoloration, just a large lump that made the rubbing together of my thighs more noticeable. When I went to my doctor for my annual checkup, I finally had him look at it. He ordered an MRI because it "definitely isn't supposed to be there". I had the MRI 4 days later and was called for a meeting with the doctor the next day. He and the surgeon advised me to see Dr Sticca in Fargo, ND. I looked him up on the Sanford website and found he was an oncology surgeon :( Our vacation to Duluth and the North Shore was cancelled and my husband and I met Dr Sticca on September 28. He told me that from the MRI, he thought my lump was Stage 2 sarcoma and wanted to do a biopsy. Six days later, he called me with the positive cancer diagnosis and scheduled surgery for October 12, 2011. (after all treatments were finished, I finally asked what specific type of sarcoma I had--perineural sarcoma)

    External radiation

    Radiation

The radiation procedure itself was painless, but the resulting 3rd degree burns were excruciating toward the end of treatments. I now have lymphedema and tingling in my leg and foot and hardened, damaged subcutaneous tissue at the burn site. My leg and lower back muscles are continuously tight making sitting and standing more painful.

    Painless Experience: Strongly Agree
    Minimal Side Effects: Disagree
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Disagree

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

My chemo was done as a preventive; I had a PET scan after complete healing from radiation burns and there was no sign of cancer. My oncologist told me it would be a "harsher than normal regimen"--3 days (4 nights) hospitalized every 3 weeks, a total of 6 treatments. I was given fluids and anti-nausea meds via the port prior to adriomycin (Red Devil) push and then ifosfamide drip that took 3 hours. I had few side effects compared to many patients and was able to keep working between treatments.

    Easy to Do: Strongly Disagree
    Minimal Side Effects: Agree
Minimal Impact to Daily Life: Agree

    Clean xray

    Celebration

I had my 6-month followup with my oncology surgeon on Oct 19, 2012 and he is happy with my progress--doesn't need to see me again (except to remove my port when that day comes)! Had my 3-month followup xray and appointment with my oncologist on Oct 22, 2012--NED! He also said I am doing very well and will see me again in 3 months. Had 6-month followup with radiation oncologist on Nov 2, 2012. He is also very happy with my recovery and should not need to see me for a year!

    Physical Therapy

    Other Care

I will start physical therapy soon to alleviate damaged, hardened tissue and its side effects from radiation . My sciatic nerve is being compressed causing tingling in my left toes, foot, and ankle.

    Port removal

    Celebration

I had my last 3-month checkup last week and all is looking great. My oncologist is confident enough in my recovery to have my port removed! I will have it done next week. My checkups are now every 4 months for a year.
