    Diagnosed

    Oh No

I was diagnosed on 9/14/2010 - after finding a cyst, which was "hiding" my tumor. Subsequent MRI found a secondary tumor in the same breast (left). Numerous biopsies of "areas of interest" but only two were cancer.

    Double Mastectomy

    Procedure or Surgery

I chose to have a bilateral mastectomy - 11-22-2010- even though the cancer was in one breast. I did not want to worry about it coming back on the other side. During the same surgery, I had tissue expanders inserted for future reconstruction surgery. I had four drains to help with the fluid drainage.

    Multiple infections/skin issues

    Oh No

3 weeks out from surgery, I suffered a bout of cellulitis, which ended up with my staying in the hospital and getting IV antibiotics (into my neck, of all places). I had multiple issues with redness/heat/swelling over the next few months, which meant multiple antibiotics for weeks at a time. All these antibiotics have left an impact on my body.

    Breast Reconstruction (Implant)

    Procedure or Surgery

I had my first recon surgery to implants in April of 2011. It was relatively smooth, and I was happy with the implants - at least the feel of them. I was not happy with the placement of one implant (on my left - cancer - side). I had to wait for things to "settle" to schedule another surgery.

    Tattoos!

    Celebration

Instead of getting nipple reconstruction, I found a great tattoo artist and did flowers on my new breasts in January of 2012. Best feeling ever...totally changed my outlook of my body.

    Lymphedema

    Side Effects

I only had 3 nodes removed in my original surgery. However, in June, 2012, I was diagnosed with lymphedema in my left upper arm. I now wear a compression sleeve when exercising, or using my arm during activities such as cleaning, etc.
