DCIS in other breast also and Stage 1 showed up in first

    Oh No

DCIS in left breast in several locations and progressed to two Stage 1 tumors. Chest MRI showed area of concern in right breast before lumpectomy and mammo immediately prior to lumpectomy indicated lumpectomies needed in both breasts

    No clear margins

    Oh No

Extensive DCIS in both breasts. Very large area in right breast very close to chest wall, lumpectomy did not result in clear margins. Many areas in left breast of DCIS and Stage 1, lumpectomy did not result in clear margins.

    Decision Point

Piece meal lumpectomies and worry forever or have double mastectomy?

    Double Mastectomy

    Procedure or Surgery

Was in hospital 24 hours and came right home and did laundry and other chores. However, extreme tightness along scarring and lumpy tissue across chest has been difficult for the 10 months so far (also had sentinel node removal both sides). What tops can I wear? Who sells tops other than T-shirts and turtlenecks that have a high enough neckline? So difficult to find bras and breast forms that work for me. My husband said it's really good I don't want reconstruction if I had this much difficulty liking external forms when I had dozens to choose from! I never would have been happy with another surgery, or 2, or 3... Very lucky to clear out all cancer and not need radiation, hormones or anything further.

    Finished treatment

    Celebration

I'm very lucky and very pleased with my decision to have both breasts removed and no reconstruction.
