    Discovered tumor

    Oh No

    Discovered tumor on clavicle that was approximately the size of 2 golf balls. Experienced soreness as the mass grew-scheduled appointment with general practitioner.

    MRI and CAT scan

    Oh No

    General practitioner ordered a series of scans to identify the mass.

    Diagnosed

    Oh No

    Scans revealed inoperable Stage 3b squamous cell lung cancer, apparent in upper right lung, right lung nodule, and mass located on clavicle. Cancer also found to have spread to lymph nodes. Life expectancy estimated at around 2-12 months without treatment.

    Treatment Decision

    Oh No

    Opted to only receive radiation on lymph nodes and tumor on clavicle. Chemotherapy strongly recommended, but refused for fear of hair loss.

    Radiation

    Radiation treatment scheduled 5 days a week for 6 weeks. Active treatment time around fifteen minutes long.

    Cough

    Side Effects

    Dry, persistent cough developed at around 14 weeks after the start of radiation. Later diagnosed as bronchitis.

    Depression/Anxiety

    Side Effects

    Previously diagnosed with depression which was made more severe by the combination of divorce, diagnosis, treatment, and denial. Depression has become extremely severe. Normal activities have been replaced with gambling and spending hours at a time on the computer.

    Is unable to stay awake through an entire day as was normal before. Naps are frequent and have become longer.

    Shortness of breath

    Side Effects

    Shortness of breath made apparent by the previously developed cough and more severe by the consumption of an average of 30 cigarettes a day. Suggestions to quit, or even to reduce the frequency of smoking are ignored.
