    Side Effects

My ejection fraction started out in the 50's. Each muga scan it was falling. When it got to 51 I said we needed to intervene here so I could continue receiving the Herceptin. I was referred to a cardiologist who started me on a beta blocker and an ACE inhibitor. It worked!

    Bone strengthening drugs

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

I first started with Fosamax 1x/wk. It worked very well. When Boniva came out I switched to that since it was only 1x/month. That didn't work as well for me. I was going to switch back to Fosamax but then I heard about Reclast, a once a year infusion. I've been on that for a few years now!

    Decision Point

Since I did not have reconstruction at the time of my mastectomy, I now had to decide if I would remove my other breast and have bilateral reconstruction or not. I decided to not remove the other breast and to have TRAM flap surgery.

    Decision Point

I was having such horrible side effects from the Tamoxifen that I asked my oncologist to switch me to Arimidex since I hadn't had a period in 13 months. He agreed; but after switching my period came back! My dr. said I had options at that point: go back to Tamoxifen or start injections of Lupron to supress my menstral cycle. I said don't I have the option of removing my ovaries to which he said you certainly do. That is what I decided to do.

    Finished treatment

    Celebration

My husband actually celebrated the end of each treatment cycle/surgery by sending me to Florida to recouperate with my sister (who is a nurse). At the end of treatment he threw me a surprise party! I reached my goal of never missing a treatment, total compliance!

I realized that spending my days in my pj's at the computer engrossed in all things cancer was not healthy. Going to therapy (cognitive behavioral) was the best thing I've ever done for myself! I feel so positive and every day is an adventure!
