    Misdiagnosed

    Oh No

I went for my annual mammogram and received negative results. Two months later, went for my annual physical with primary doctor and reported i felt a breast lump. She checked and casually dismissed as a cyst and because mam was recent and clean. Set me up for an ultrasound as a precautiinary measure. The radiologist reviewed ultrasound and ordered two biopsies one at the lump and the other at the lymp gland. Results went back to primary doctor and the office called to have me come in. Went to doctors office and nurse printed out all procedures done. The results all stated negative. Called hubby and friends to advise of good news. Only to be told, after waiting 45 minutes for doctor, that results were not the final version. The radiologist had called to advise of carcinoma. The lymp node was negative and lump positive. Not only did I get the wrong diagnosis, I received another negative mammogram after they took a new picture with the marker for the mass. They said its because my breasts are dense. I put a lot of faith in annual mammograms mistakenly. I'm young and healthy!! Eat well , drink moderately, exercise, normal weight, no medication, no surgery. How did this happen???

    Lumpectomy vs masectomy

    Decision Point

Met with surgeon and mentioned I have a new lump on opposite breast. She felt it and stated it was a cyst and she was going to allieve that worry. Proceeded to immediately perform a small needle biopsy with no prep or ultrasound. Removed the fluid and said now we can move forward. Boy was I impressed. Talk about confidence and competence. I knew I was in capable hands. After a lot of discussion and weighing both options, I chose the lumpectomy which my husband and I both felt the surgeon was guiding us toward. The hormone receptor tests both negative. Test results not back for heb. A little concerned I may be triple negative. Surgery scheduled in 2 weeks.

Proceed with a lumpectomy now that a second mass has been identified?

    Decision Point

Called while on business trip in Fl to advise the MRI picked up a second lump (12 and 2). Shortening trip to fly home for an ultrasound and biopsy. Surgeon indicates she can get both lumps with a single incision and preserve breast. Hoping this is right decision.

    Cancer has spread/Metastasized

    Oh No

Second biopsy found more cancer. Grade 3 at 1:00. Initial mass at 12:00 so surgeon states she can remove all 3 locations ( two carcinoma and one benign near lymp nodes) with a single lumpectomy. Putting a lot of faith in the skill of my surgeon. Two cancer sites are very high - above bra line and near collar bone - how could this ever be picked up on a mammogram? Fortunately the MRI caught the second site.

    Lumpectomy

    Procedure or Surgery

Had a lumpectomy yesterday, September 17th. Removed two cancerous tumors and one non-cancerous mass. It went very well - no side effects at all from anesthesia - which i was concerned about. Actually had a full dinner last night - i felt so good - only taking tylenol 3 for pain. Also had the sentinel node procedure and results are negative - Yea!! Have experienced swelling and fluid build up post surgery. Went back to surgeon to remove fluid which provided immediate relief. Only problem is fluid started to rebuild again after a couple of hours - inconvenient since surgeon's office is not close - hoping this resolves itself soon! Went back to hospital today for drainage again - diagnosed as a Seroma - hoping this is the last time! Had to go back again for another drainage. This time they did a ultra sound guided needle to extract the fluid. Three weeks in, I got an infection at the site of the wound under my arm - ugh. The simple lumpectomy is no longer simple. Finally healing after 4 weeks and antibiotic. Doc says body should be able to absorb excess fluids but will take some time. Pathology report - triple negative on one mass (1.8cm) and estrogen positive on the smaller mass (5mm). Both sites a grade 3 aggressive cancer. Next meeting with oncologist - not looking forward to this phase. Onc had both tumors retested. Confirmed they were both triple negative. Said they were tested at two different labs. Could have been on a hormone replacement drug for 5 years in error - ugh!! Glad he did it

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

First chemo treatment yesterday, 11/2. Had blood work done. Then an IV started ( no port so he had to find a vein - slight ouch!) started with Aloxi and Decadron ( steroid and anti-nausea meds). My chemo drugs are Taxotere & Cytoxan. I was very anxious with a nervous stomach in anticipation of the unknown. After the steroid hit, I was more relaxed. Entire chemo treatment was about 3 hours, but I also did the cold cap therapy hair treatment which added 4 hours to the end! Very long 9 hour day, with the cold cap headaches and duration, much worse than the chemo treatment. So far, so good with no side effects on day 2.

    Fatigue (tiredness)

    Side Effects

Achy joints and muscles with fatigue. For the most part, very manageable with rest and Tylenol. With each treatment, fatigue gets worse. 3rd treatment even Tylenol would not help muscle pain.

    Hot flashes

    Side Effects

Night sweats. They started after surgery as my body was trying to regulate the fluid buildup from lumpectomy. Resumed again when chemo started. Going into chemo pause as the ovaries shut down. Unpleasant but bearable. Fortunately it's winter and I'm running a ceiling fan.

Genetics testing for Braca 1 & 2 came back negative!

    Celebration

Was very concerned and anxious waiting on these results. With a triple negative diagnosis and no medical history because I'm adopted, expected the worse. Now I can thankfully move onto radiation after one more chemo treatment - yea!!

    Constipation

    Side Effects

Serious constipation following 4th round of chemo. Followed constipation protocol and still went way too long. 4 days before it was resolved and changed over to diarrhea. Pay attention to your body to avoid this.

    Phase 3 accelerated radiation

    Clinical Trial

Met criteria, filled out survey, now wait to see if I'm randomly selected to participate. Reduces rads from 6 weeks to 3 weeks. We'll see.
