    Colon surgery (colectomy or hemicolectomy)

    Procedure or Surgery

I was very fortunate that the procedure went well and I never really missed much work. I was back breaking 80 on the golf course and learning how to snow board within 6 weeks. - Lucky, but determined guy...

    Diagnosed

    Oh No

Out of the blue at age 40. But, was a light smoker, poor eater and generally didn't take very good care of my self. I blame this on that and chronic stress for years of work, etc.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

This goes back 15 years, but the chemo was OK after I started to take a hit off a pot pipe on the way in. It made me feel better. I was also able to do some cardio immediately after the treatment, which helped too. The mental hit was much more difficult for whatever reason. The chemo brain creeped in and has only lifted in the last few years.

    Chemo brain

    Side Effects

This was a long term effect and anti-depressants may have contributed.

    Diarrhea

    Side Effects

This may also be related to anti-depressants, but it lasted for several years.

    Other Care

The cancer experience turned my world upside down. Maybe because I was weak mentally, but it just changed me. I ended up on anti-depressants for 10 years, which was a huge mistake, I believe. The meds were highly addictive and added another layer of brain fog to the chemo brain. By the time I finally got off those meds 12 years later, I had shut down my business, lost my enthusiasm and zest for life, had alienated my friends and family, got divorced and ended up alone. Breakthrough

    Celebration

After getting off anti-depressants 12 years after cancer, I started to rebuild my life. Went to the gym 3 to 5 days per week, ate well and got my chemistry "perfect". I met a wonderful woman that shared an interest in spirituality and meditation. I also met a terrific therapist that I connected with and I finally feel like I am coming back "online". It's been a long road. But I celebrate my survival everyday now and see the glass half full instead of half empty. When someone tells you "attitude is everything", listen carefully. Much love and good luck to my fellow survivors!
