    Cancer has spread/Metastasized

    Oh No

Diagnosed with melanoma after removing a mole from the top of my head. Then at the same time noticed that it had already spread to the lymph nodes in my neck.

Surgery to remove cancer that has spread

    Procedure or Surgery

The cancer had spread from my initial site(a mole at the top of my head) to the lymph nodes in my neck. The surgery removed the malignant nodule and the surrounding lymph nodes.

    Chemotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

Interferon Treatment, the high-dose 4 week treatment and the low-dose 48 week treatment. However my immune system only allowed for 3 weeks of the high-dose treatment.

    Simple removal surgery

    Procedure or Surgery

This was one of the simpler surgeries that I have experienced. The tumor had spread to the area at the bottom of the head and the top of the neck, right behind my right ear. The surgery required some stitches and a drainage tube, but I could still maneuver around easily on my own.

    Chemotherapy and immunotherapy combined (biochemotherapy)

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

About 5 months after the surgery to remove the tumor that was discovered on my neck, I started biochemo therapy at MD Anderson. This treatment was anything but easy. I lost 25lbs and had to be taken off it early because my immune system was too low and that I had lost too much weight. I experience change in the taste of food(everything was bland), sores in my mouth and throat, nausea, and just a lot more negative side effects. However, that doesn't necessarily discount the effectiveness of this treatment for someone else, so don't let my one negative experience scare you away from it.

    Drug injected into tumor

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

This was a very interesting trial that I had at John Wayne Cancer institute. It involved my immune system and teaching it to recognize a harmless disease that was injected into my lymph node areas, then eventually injected into the tumor site itself. By injected a substance that my immune system had already recognized, when injected into the tumor site, my body had recognized it there and destroyed the tumor and the recognizable disease. It was very interesting, and I am sorry that I don't have much more info on it.

Surgery to remove cancer that has spread

    Procedure or Surgery

Side thoracotomy to remove the tumors from my right lung. Very intense recovery, but definitely doable, just hard at the beginning of recovery.

    Immunotherapy

    Drug or Chemo Therapy

Some type of immunotherapy that had much less side effects than other chemotherapy treatments I had been on. Two shots in each leg and would get them once every three weeks I believe?

    Simple removal surgery

    Procedure or Surgery

Another side thoracotomy to remove more tumors in my right lung. This time I knew what to expect and the recovery seemed a but easier in some ways.

    Remission

    Celebration

The cancer from the previous diagnosis had gone away on its own after the biopsy!! My doctor believes its a combination of all my treatments and just the way my body has grown to handle things. So far I have been cancer free since December of 2011!
